Roche Moron and Tour Jurgensen at the start of the Col des Roches

Set off to explore this magnificent trail, from La Roche and Côte de Moron, including the "Pillichody" trail (a high-altitude path, not suitable for children, impassable in winter) – sure-footedness is essential! The path is very narrow in places, with cables provided to secure the tricky sections.

The Jurgensen Tower, which is often open, is located along the route. There is a panoramic view of Villers-le-Lac, Les Brenets and the valley.

Do not attempt this hike in wet weather.

Description of the walk

Start at Le Locle at the Col des Roches. There is a free car park on an unpaved area.

(S/E) Take the path uphill towards the two Roches Voumard viewpoints. At the junction, take the path on the right to reach the southern viewpoint (view of Le Locle).

(1) Turn back and take the path leading uphill towards the northern viewpoint. Continue towards “Les Petits Monts”.

(2) Take the path on the right and go round the farm to reach the small road "Chemin des Roches-Voumard". Continue straight ahead.

(3) Leave the marked trail and take the small road leading uphill. Continue along the small road on the right until the next junction, then take the “Les Saneys” path on the left. Stay on this main path.

(4) Cross the road carefully and take the path opposite, heading towards “Roches de Moron”. Be careful, as the signposting is unclear on this section.

(5) You will come to a road; take it to the left. Then, at the crossroads, continue to the right until you reach the next sign.

(6) Cross the road carefully and take the path to the L'Escarpineau viewpoint.

(7) Make a round trip to the viewpoint, then take the path descending to the left (Chemin de Choudens) towards “Roches de Moron”.

(8) Continue to the left on the difficult-rated trail (Sentier Pillichody), marked with red and white signs. Take extreme care. Make a return trip to the superb CAS viewpoint.

(9) Continue straight on to the Recrettes viewpoint. After admiring the view, continue straight on to the hamlet of “Les Recrettes” and take the path down to the junction.

(10) Continue along the descending road towards “La Saignotte”. Cross the road with care and continue along the path opposite. Ignore the path a little further on to the left; continue towards the farm. Walk past the farm to rejoin the road.

(11) Continue straight on towards "Les Brenets" to reach L'Augémont-Dessus.

(12) Take the path on the left and continue straight ahead. After crossing the road, keep an eye out for the signposts and continue downhill. You will cross a private property; take the steps leading down to reach the junction.

(13) Continue towards "Tour Jurgensen" on the descending road. Then cross the road carefully and turn right, then left onto the ascending path.

(14) On your right, make a round trip to the Jurgensen Tower. If it is open, you can climb the stairs and enjoy the superb view over the valley. Then return to point 15, and head towards "La Caroline" along a superb path on your right. Viewpoint at the spot known as "Caroline". Superb.

(15) Take the path down towards “Col des Roches”. You’ll come to a small road; continue to the left for a few metres, then take the path down to the right.

(16) Continue down to the left. When you reach the tree where the signs are clearly visible, continue down to the right.

(17) Take the narrow path on the left and climb up to join a wide, stony track. Continue along this track, “La Ranconnière”, to the power station. Continue along the road and climb up.

(18) Head up the path on the right to reach the road. Cross carefully to reach the car park.

(E) Car park.

Worth a visit

The Jürgensen Tower:
Built in the 1870s on a rocky outcrop, this tower offers a panoramic view of the village of Les Brenets and the Doubs valley. Oriented towards the four cardinal points, the Jürgensen Tower is a square structure with sides measuring 4 metres; it rises to a height of nearly 14 metres and features a viewing platform accessible via a spiral staircase of 66 steps. It owes its name to the Jürgensen family, of Danish origin, who played an important role in the watchmaking world of Le Locle inthe 19th century. The tower is said to have served as a mausoleum, housing a stele concealing a funerary urn which is said to have contained the heart of a family member as well as the ashes of the family archives, which have never been found.
