Grotte du Grenier, Lac de Moron, Tête de Calvin and Saut du Doubs

Depart from Le Pissoux, descend to the Grotte de Grenier above the Doubs and cross the river on stepping stones, allowing you to cross dry-shod downstream from the Châtelot dam, followed by the magnificent marked trail on the right bank of the Doubs (Lac du Moron) on the Swiss side. At the Saut du Doubs, head back and forth to the Tête de Calvin to see the meanders of the Doubs basins stretching from Viller-le-Lac to the Saut du Doubs from above, then cross the Doubs via the footbridge upstream of the Saut du Doubs, pass by the viewpoints overlooking the Saut du Doubs and climb directly up through the forest to Le Pissoux, via the Belvédère du Châtelard overlooking Lac de Moron.

Description of the walk

Parking at the bottom of the village of Le Pissoux below the church.

(S/E) From the car park, walk a few dozen metres up towards the church and, at the crossroads, turn right towards the Grotte du Grenier. Ignore the first path on the right.

(1) At the crossroads, take the path on the right.

(2) At the junction of marked paths 150 metres further on, take the left-hand path. Ignore the path that branches off further to the left, as well as the marked path on the left, then zigzag down to the foot of the Grotte du Grenier.

(3) You can access the cave via two ladders (metal + wood). Then continue straight ahead, ignoring the paths on the right that go uphill and, further on, the path on the left that goes downhill. Pass by the Chez Nemorin chalet. Ignore the marked path that goes uphill to the right at Moulin Billod Martel.

(4) A few dozen metres further on, at the junction of marked paths, turn left towards the Doubs. At the river, climb down a ladder.

(5) Cross the Doubs by walking on a stone, then cross the stepping stones to reach the Swiss bank of the Doubs and walk upstream towards the Châtelot Dam, then follow the pleasant path on the Swiss bank of Lake Moron formed by the Châtelot Dam.

(6) At the picnic area, descend on the right towards the Swiss bank and its viewpoint above the Saut du Doubs. Then continue following the Doubs upstream from the waterfall.

(7) Leave the footbridge on your right to reach the French bank of the Doubs (which you will take on the way back) and follow the road towards Les Brenets for a round trip

(8) At the crossroads, take a marked path on the left and climb up to the Tête de Calvin.

(9) After enjoying the view of the meandering lake formed by the Doubs between Villers-le-Lac, Les Brenets and the Saut du Doubs below, take the same path back to the French-Swiss footbridge.

(7) Cross the footbridge and, 100 metres further on, turn right onto the path signposted Belvédère du Saut du Doubs on the French side. At the next junction, ignore the path that climbs to the left.

(10) Admire the Saut du Doubs from the viewpoint on the French side. Then turn back, turn right twice and climb up to the second viewpoint located above the Saut du Doubs.

(11) At the nearby junction of marked trails, continue to the left, ignoring the one on the right.

(12) At the junction of marked trails, follow the one on the right.

(13) At this trail junction, take the unmarked trail on the right.

(14) At the next junction of marked trails, take the one on the right that climbs towards the Belvédère du Châtelard. This section will be covered as a round trip.

(15) From the viewpoint, after enjoying the view, descend back to the previous trail junction.

(14) Turn right. At the edge of the forest, ignore the path that branches off to the right, then the next one that also branches off to the right. At the buildings, bear slightly to the right.

(16) At the crossroads, follow the road to the right, descend to the bottom of the village of Le Pissoux and return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

When crossing into Switzerland, bring your identity papers.

Not recommended in rainy weather. No shelter or water points along the route

Climb to the Grotte du Grenier via metal ladders.

Be careful with the water level of the Doubs, which must not be too high to cross the stepping stones downstream from the Châtelot dam, nor too low (low water levels due to summer drought) to really enjoy the Saut du Doubs on both sides of the border.
