From Liaucous to Églazines

A beautiful hike along the edge of the Causse de Sauveterre, above the Tarn valley.
Hike modified on 17/05/2023. See practical information.
Author's note, July 2023: I redid this route (July 2023) and found it completely disrupted by a recent fire in the upper part of the route. A well-marked trail has been marked in yellow since this event. It deviates slightly from the original route in places but is easy to follow.

Description of the walk

Departure from Liaucous, a beautiful village above Le Rozier and the confluence of the Tarn and Jonte rivers. There is a good car park at the top of the village, near the church and cemetery.

(S/E) From the car park, with your back to the cemetery, continue left on the road leading out of the village. Turn left onto a path and climb north-east. The path turns right and reaches a crossroads. Turn left to continue north on a well-marked path. Pass a side path leading to the Liaucous via ferrata and continue to a ravine facing north then north-east.

(1) At a crossroads, continue straight ahead uphill to reach a plateau on the causse.

(2) When you reach a wide path, turn right and then quickly turn left. Continue along this relatively flat path.

(3) When you reach an intersection at the edge of the forest, continue straight ahead on the path descending towards the south-east. You will pass a remarkable mushroom-shaped rock. The path then turns south, becoming steeper, and winds its way down to the abandoned village of Eglazines.

(4) At Eglazines, take a path on the right that leads back to Liaucous, following a contour line. After 1.5 km, ignore a path on the left that descends into the Carbasse woods. Further on, the path descends to a small road. It climbs to the right to the bottom of the village of Liaucous.
When you reach a crossroads, continue straight ahead on Rue Lacroix. Take the second street on the right, then turn right onto Rue Sabotier. Turn left twice, then right to reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Don't forget to bring something to drink. There is a fountain at the start.
Moderator's note: Due to a section crossing private property, the part of point 3 at Roc des Agudes has been removed.

Worth a visit

The village of Liaucous is very picturesque, with its church and paved slanting streets.
The abandoned village of Eglazines is also interesting.

Beautiful walk
This route is not very busy during the week at this time of year.
New signposting in the area devastated by fire.
Very beautiful landscapes despite the marks still visible from the fire.

A very pleasant route with varied landscapes.
However, the end of the first part up to the "mushroom" is in a state of desolation following a recent fire. The locals are devastated.
Best done in the cool of the morning as most of the paths are open and exposed to the sun.
The views are beautiful and the route is well marked.
Very few people at the beginning of August.

Please note: between points 1 and 2, follow the yellow path and not the Viso Rando GPS track. Otherwise, it's a lovely walk, not very busy.

Hike done in the late afternoon (so not too crowded).
I took a wrong turn at the start, which meant I climbed up to the right, towards Roc des Agudes, before returning to the top of the causse and heading back towards Eglazines (oh yes, I also almost missed the path down there, but when I turned back I found it signposted).
All in all, a magnificent route, in the beautiful solitude of the end of the day, amidst life slowly returning to the burnt area: the black of the tree trunks, the red of the flowering lichens, the changing light of a cloudy day...

No directions available ++
Unable to find the way to Eglazines

Otherwise, exceptional views!
Promises to be a magnificent hike if the directions are redone along the way!

I retraced this route (July 2023) and found it completely disrupted by a recent fire that swept through the upper part of the trail. A well-marked path has been marked in yellow since this event. It deviates slightly from the original route in places but is easy to follow.

A magnificent hike that leads to Eglazines and then to the hermitage of St Marcellin
Surprising semi-troglodytic sites: a must-see!
Following the fire in the summer of 2022, we saw the tremendous work done by firefighters (wide tracks, etc.), who completely changed the landscape along part of the route. And the route: Follow the yellow markings that were recently put in place, especially on the plateau (Le Vor, 920 m elevation gain).
920m elevation gain
Beautiful panoramic views
16 km covered and not very busy: pure bliss!
