The panoramic Tarn at Saint-Marcelin

A beautiful circular route starting from the pretty village of Liaucous, which allows you to climb from the Tarn valley to the Causse de Sauveterre and then walk along the edge of the causse for long stretches, offering beautiful views. The return trail allows you to discover two ancient troglodyte villages.
Visorando app recommended.

Description of the walk

At the bottom of the village of Liaucous, park in the designated visitor car park.

(S/E) From the car park, cross the road, head slightly to the left and then climb towards the centre of the village via a first paved slanting street, cross a street, take a few more steps to the left and then take another paved slanting street uphill to reach the church. Go around it on the right, then follow the road to the right for about 20 metres. Continue along the leftmost lane, cross a street and follow the path opposite, marked "Via ferrata".

(1) At the intersection, ignore the path that climbs steeply to the left, stay to the right on a steady climb, going around the cliffs. At the next intersection (sign for the via ferrata return), keep to the right again. Finally, you will reach a flat area, then a T-junction with a track.

(2) You can make a round trip to the right to the Roc des Agudes viewpoint (caution: vultures, which are very present on the site, do not like to be disturbed during the nesting period). Otherwise, follow the track to the left. You will reach an intersection with a private road (Ferme du Puech).

(3) Follow the diversion put in place after this file was created (to modify the route and this description, I followed the instructions in the notice dated 04/10/2024). Ignore a path on the left and continue to an intersection.

(4) Follow this path to the left, ignoring a path on the right further on. You will arrive at an intersection near the hamlet of Vors.

(5) Make a round trip to the left to visit the site, then return to the intersection.

(5) Take the track on the left and you will soon reach an intersection. Take the yellow-marked path on the right. Stay on the yellow trail, ignoring any side paths. After several changes of direction, the path reaches the Grotte des Paillasses, which has a spring. This is a pleasant spot for a break, but it can sometimes be a little crowded.

(6) Continue east on the yellow-marked trail. After about 100 metres, you will reach a trail junction. Keep to the right and follow the yellow markings. At the fork just after, keep to the left, still following the yellow markings. The trail descends and joins a T-junction with theGRP®® Tour du Causse de Sauveterre, marked in red and yellow, which you should now follow until you reach Liaucous.

(7) Turn right and begin a steady descent, staying on theGRP®®. You will reach the troglodytic village of Saint-Marcellin.

(8) Cross the village and continue on theGRP®®, ignoring the side paths. Walk along the Cirque de Saint-Marcellin and reach the semi-troglodytic village of Églazines.

(9) Continue on theGRP®®, ignoring the path that descends to the left a little further on. Descend gently towards Liaucous. You will arrive at a road.

(10) Follow it to the right and leave it on the right at the first intersection. Join the road that passes through the lower part of Liaucous and follow it to the left to quickly reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

Hike of moderate to difficult difficulty. The climb in the first part is quite steep. Standard hiking equipment. Hiking poles may be useful.

I recommend usingthe Visorando app to follow the route, as there are many paths crossing each other in some sections.

Note 2: Route modified after this file was created between (3) and (4). Trail and description updated according to the notice dated 04/10/2024. I am not on site to specify the markings.

Note 1: TheGRP®® was long prohibited in Églazines for safety reasons (rock falls, overhanging climbing site!). It is now (2024) completely safe.

Worth a visit

Magnificent views on the climb that continues along the edge of the causse, then on the GRP®®.

Amazing troglodyte dwellings in villages clinging to the cliff.

Multiple trees (between 10 and 15) appear to have been deliberately cut down by vandals in order to block several sections of the path so that people can no longer pass through. It is clear that they were cut down in such a way that they would fall across the path to block the way. This was not caused by a storm. But you can still get through 😉

A pleasant walk with a moderate level of difficulty. Beware, however, that the route has a few reliability problems between points 2 and 3, and there are also some sections that have been complicated by fallen trees on the paths between points 6 and 8.

Thank you for reporting the change in route. According to your track, it's a little before (3) and up to (4)? Can I use this track to correct mine? Do you remember which markings you followed on this section?

Kind regards

A magnificent, very varied route, with no tarmac (except for 200 metres at the finish).
The panoramic views are all breathtaking. It's best to use the app because the plateau is a real maze. On this same plateau, part of the route is no longer accessible (private property), but an alternative has been set up with very good signage.
Thank you for this superb route.
