Courpalet ditch, Gué l’Évêque circular loop

A largely shaded circular walk along the water’s edge. This walk follows the Rigole de Courpalet for nearly 5km before entering the Forest of Orléans and skirting the Étang du Gué l’Évêque.
The Rigole de Courpalet, 32.8 km long, was dug to feed the Canal d’Orléans.

Description of the walk

To reach the start of this circular route from Montereau, follow the D119 towards Ouzouer-sur-Loire. Continue for approximately 4.25 km and take a small road on the right just after a riding centre, at a place called Le Bout de la Rue.
Follow signs for Gué l’Évêque and park on the right-hand side of the embankment.

(S/E) Leave the car park and follow the dyke north-west, then continue right along the Route de La Belle Étoile, ignoring all side streets.
Pass the hamlet known as La Cannerie and head towards La Maison Bourbeuse.

(1) Take the path on the right at the edge of La Maison Bourbeuse. Cross a small bridge and turn immediately right, cross a small wooden bridge and follow the Rigole de Courpalet, ignoring any paths or footbridges.

(2) Be careful: a spillway encroaches onto the path and is difficult to see if the grass is tall. Continue straight ahead and join a small tarmac road called Chemin des Chalopins.

(3) Cross this road and continue along the Rigole de Courpalet.
Pass close to the Ferme du Moulin Rose and reach the D44.

(4) Cross carefully, then continue until you reach the D44 again at a place called La Croix Saint-Pierre.
Take care when crossing. Continue following the Rigole de Courpalet until you reach a small road.

(5) Follow the road to the right, cross the bridge over the Rigole de Courpalet. After 250m, the road becomes a track again; follow the blue markings.

(6) Cross a path at a place called La Fosse aux Épinards. From this point, there are two parallel paths; follow the one on the right, which runs between two rows of trees. Join a small road at a place called La Ragonnerie.

(7) Cross the road and continue straight on until you reach a small road.

(8) Turn left and continue for about 600m, passing a transformer.

(9) Turn right after the bend and follow a wide path called Route des Mitonnières. Reach the Carrefour des Mitonnières and take the first path on the right (Route du Signal), marked with red and white signs.
As you approach the pond, follow the small path on the left (wetland), marked with red and white signs.
Pass a wide path on your left. You will reach a white path (Route de la Souche).

(10) Turn right and continue to the Carrefour du Gué l’Évêque.

(11) Take the first path on the right (Route du Gué l’Évêque) and continue along this path until you reach a small road.

(12) Turn right and continue straight on to the car park (S/E)

A well-described route, very little tarmac, a lovely, peaceful path. A bit muddy at the moment in January.

A very pleasant and varied route. The description is very detailed. There are several shortcuts available along the way. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

A pleasant walk along the canal and around the pond. In my opinion, there aren’t enough signposts to indicate the local place names.

Thank you to the Montereau local council for posting the walk and for the only picnic table actually near your town (if you could just trim the grass around the table and bench, that would be even better);

You shouldn’t do the last part of the route if it’s hot... the wide forest paths aren’t particularly interesting. The whole section along the ditch is very pleasant, shaded... and not very busy. The tall grass might put off future walkers, but it can have its charm – you feel like you’re alone in the world! It is therefore possible to shorten the route at point 8: instead of taking the road on the left to continue, turn right to reach the S/E point. It still makes for a lovely circular route.

A very pleasant walk along the Courpalet canal and through the Lorris area of the Forest of Orléans.
