Description of the walk

GRP® 571 Yellow and Red Trail Markers

(S) With your back to the entrance to the Remouchamps caves, turn right towards the Amblève and turn left at thefirst road. Cross with caution and go up the Avenue Marcellin la Garde, which is a one-way street. After No. 9, with a shrine on the corner of the road, leave theGR®576on your left and continue straight ahead. At the large crossroads, keep left and continue along Rue de Spa until you reach an intersection on your left.

(1) Turn left and take the Vieille Voie de Spa. Turn right, cross with caution and pass under the viaduct on your left. Turn right and go up Rue Thier de Nonceveux, which has a steep 9% gradient. Leave the built-up area and walk to thefirst dirt track on your right.

(2) Turn right and walk for about 250 m. Ignore the path on your right and then the path opposite and continue left until you reach the crossroads.

(3) Continue straight ahead towards Tilleul du Pendu. Pass it and go down into the forest. At the T-junction, turn right and follow the forest path, continuing left until you reach a multiple junction with a cross on your left. Turn right. A path will appear on your left; continue straight ahead. At the road, go straight ahead, pass the Ninglinspo car park and leave theGR® 15 trail on your left. Walk straight ahead on the road until you reach No. 21.

(4) If flooding of the Amblève is reported at Fond de Quarreux, turn left to take the alternative route. Otherwise, continue straight ahead on the road and turn right at thefirst road on your right. Pass under the railway line, follow the road and continue along the path at the end of it, walking alongside the Fonds de Quarreux for about 1 km.

(5) At the road, turn left and go under the railway line through the pedestrian tunnel. Take the path on the left going up to the N633 and cross with caution. Turn left and then immediately right onto the path and go up. Cross the road and take the path opposite, slightly to the left. At the top, at the crossroads with the alternative route returning to your left, turn right onto the road. Continue downhill for just over 450 m until you reach the intersection with another road.

(6) Turn left. Enter the forest and take the forest path on your left. Then turn onto the path on your right and start walking along the Chefna. Pass the Cabane de l'Orpailleur, go back up the forest path and continue to the right. Take the path on the right after the concrete post. Further on, ford a tributary of the Chefna. Cross afirst footbridge and then asecond tributary of the Chefna.

(7) Continue along the stream and cross three more footbridges until you come back onto the forest track. Keep to the right. At the wide bend with signs for the gold mines, continue straight ahead. Pass the place called Heid de la Mine d'Or, climb up and continue along the Chefna from above.

(8) Pass the place called La Mine d'Or where, on your left near the rock, you will find Mine Shaft No. 1. Leave the woods and at the crossroads, continue straight ahead until you reach a fork.

(9) Turn right and cross the footbridge over the Chefna. Walk under the conifers and turn left at the wide path. At the next intersection, stay on the wide path and continue straight ahead for a little over 400 m.

(10) Look for the path on your left after the bend in the wide path. You will come back to the Chefna, which is much narrower. When you reach the property on your left, take the footbridge and continue along the path on the other bank. At the end of the path, turn left and then right onto the road. Walk to the N 606, cross with caution and turn right onto the dirt track on your left.

(11) Turn left, enter the Parc Naturel des Sources and follow La Vecquée for just under 400 m until you reach a path on your right. A sign will indicate Pas Bayard (optional detour: see Practical Information). Continue straight ahead for more than 500 m and at the next intersection, still on your right, continue straight ahead.

(12) Turn right onto the path starting at a footbridge. Several footbridges have been installed so that you don't have to walk on the muddy path. Walk to the Croix Honnay.

(13) Pass by and, at the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the wide forest path. Walk for about 560 m, leave the path on your right and, at the multiple crossroads, take the middle path. Join a road and continue downhill. At the fork, take the hairpin bend to the left.

(14) Pass the place called Les Linaigrettes. Keep right at the fork and ignore the path on your left after a property. Continue on the main path until you reach the cross on your left.

(15) Turn right. Leave the road on your right and continue straight ahead. At the road, turn right, follow it to a T-junction and turn left. Then turn right and keep to the right. At the next road, turn left and continue to No. 12.

(16) Take the path on the right near the holly. The path turns left. Follow the barefoot path from the farm. Cross the N633 with caution, diagonally to the left, and head down the street to No. 47.

(17) Take the path starting in front of the house and leading to a road. At the crossroads, turn left. Follow the road up to the intersection on the right (signposting ends).

No signposts

Continue straight ahead until you reach the intersection on the left with a cross on the corner and behind the church. Go up to the left until you reach the church entrance (E).

Worth a visit

During

Fonds de Quarreux: 1 km along the Amblève river, mysterious rounded rocks come into view. Legend has it that these quartzite stones with pearly veins are the remains of a mill that the devil built for a miller who promised him his soul. The miller was saved by his wife, who prevented the mill from turning. Enraged, the devil destroyed it and killed the poor woman. It is said that if you listen carefully, you can still hear the old man's cries in this fantastical place.
The Gold Digger's Hut.
Old Gold Mines.
Natural Spring Park.
La Vecquée: an ancient Roman road used in the Middle Ages by prince-bishops to travel from Liège to Stavelot Abbey. A historic border between states, it still marks the boundary between Theux and Stoumont today.

Croix Honnay: a cross erected by a traveller who once got lost in the snow, to serve as a guide for others who, like him, might get lost in these desolate surroundings. The first cross burned down along with the surrounding Fagnes in 1927, and a concrete cross was erected in its place the same year. In 2013, lightning struck a beech tree next to it and fell on the concrete cross, damaging it. Only the cast iron Christ remained intact. It was placed on the current 3-metre-high larch cross.

Hello Marc Despiegelaere,

Visorando is not responsible for installing signs or markings.
This route is a GRP = Grande Randonnée de Pays (long-distance footpath) and is already marked accordingly.
I have provided an explanation in bold at the beginning of the paragraph: GRP® 571 Yellow and Red Markings
I also recommend installing the Visorando app on your smartphone; it's free.
Once the GPX track has been loaded onto the app and tracking has been activated, an alarm will sound if you stray from the track. This is always useful to avoid walking extra kilometres.

Best regards

Please note: between points 5 (Fonds de Quarreux) and 6 in the description. "At the top, at the crossroads with the alternative route returning to your left, turn right onto the road."
We missed this "right" turn and ended up back on the road to Ninglinspo Nonceveux.
Installing arrows at this point (1) verst Stoumont and (2) towards Nonceveux would be a solution.
