Refuge d'en Beys - Orlu via the Étang de Naguille

Fourth and final stage of the tour of the Orlu and Montagne d'Ax reserves.
I have classified this stage as difficult because of the 1,650 m descent on a steep and sometimes damaged path.
The view from the Couillade d'en Beys (3) to the dam (8) is magnificent.
The stage begins by heading in the opposite direction to the previous day's route, taking theGR®®107and theGRP®® Tour des Pérics andGRP®® Tour des Montagnes d'Ax. At (2), be careful to turn right, west, onto theGRP®® Tour des Montagnes d'Ax, and continue until you reach the end of the four-day hike.
The estimated time is underestimated: the descent is difficult on steep and degraded paths after the Couillade d'en Beys (3).

⚠️ From (S/E) to (10), you are on the edge of or within the Orlu National Hunting and Wildlife Reserve, where regulations must be observed. See practical information.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Four days in the Orlu Reserve and the Montagne d'Ax

Description of the walk

Red and white markings onthe GR®® 7 andGRP®® Tour des Pérics trails.

(S) From the refuge, take the same route as the previous day, heading south-west.

(1) Fork in the path. Do not descend towards the footbridge.
Continue straight ahead, still heading south-west. Pass the Étang de la Couillade on your right. Very rocky landscape. You will come to a fork and directional signs fixed in the rocks.

Red and yellowGRP®® Tour des Montagnes d'Axmarkings.

(2) Continue now, to the right, climbing steeply, first west, then due north, and then 90° west again towards a passage (at around 2,355 m). Reach the highest point of the hike (at around 2,390 m) and descend slightly towards the Couillade d'en Beys. This marks the end of the Orlu National Hunting and Wildlife Reserve. The landscape changes dramatically and opens up to wide open spaces.
Magnificent view of the numerous Peyrisses ponds.

(3) Head completely right, due north, descending above a scree slope.
after about 400 m of descent, you can turn left at the edge of the first pond.
Follow a small lake on your left (at around 2,250 m). Continue downhill between small lakes.

(4) Ford the Ruisseau d'Eychouzé and turn north-west.

(5) The restored Eychouzé hut is often occupied by a shepherd. Continue until you reach the footbridge over the Ruisseau d'Eychouzé.

(6) Cross it and head west, then north-west to follow the Étang de Naguille. Reach the footbridge over the water inlet of the Étang Déroun spillway. Waterfall. Ruins of a building on the right.

(7) Follow the old railway line along the left bank of the pond (Coumo de Nioles).
Cross the streams flowing down from the mountains and arrive at the dam.
50 m after the waterfall, a path on the left leads up to the Étang Déroun, southwest, then south, on the left bank of the torrent flowing down from the spillway.

(8) I recommend taking a break here. You still have a 950 m descent ahead of you on a path that is very steep in places. It was used for the construction of the dam and for mining.
Descend the switchbacks towards the Ruisseau d'Eychouzé.

(9) Cross a footbridge. Continue along the right bank of the stream towards the buildings. Follow the cable car installations (EDF) for a while.

(10) Cross a footbridge. Continue along the left bank of the stream, passing under the cable car installations that run straight ahead at the bottom of the valley.
Continue downhill. Reach the penstock and turn right at a right angle, heading south-east without crossing the Riou Fred. Reach a track suitable for vehicles.

(11) Turn completely left onto the track, on the left bank of the Oriège.

(12) Leave the track, keeping to the left bank of the Oriège.

(13) Cross a small road at a car park, keeping on the left bank.

(14) On the outskirts of the village, turn right over the road bridge over the Oriège and head for the car park (E).

Notes

We started this stage in foggy conditions, then in the rain from the Étang de Naguille to Orlu. The long descent from the dam was no walk in the park.
Allow at least 5 hours of walking for this stage.
There is a lot of water along the way: bring a filter or disinfectant tablets.
Shelter: Eychouzé refuge and under the eaves of buildings below the dam.
This is a hike in a mountainous area. You will therefore need: warm and waterproof clothing, water, snacks, a route map, a description, a map, a GPS device, a camera, good walking shoes and possibly a walking stick.
Additional equipment for multi-day hikes is described in the summary for the four days.

Please note that the track is not maintained and may be damaged and in very poor condition.

From the En Beys refuge, the first part of the climb (500m elevation gain) is challenging but achievable for any average hiker. The view from the top is well worth the effort and is magnificent.
The first part of the descent to the Naguille lake is also superb and represents about 500m of elevation loss.
Things get tougher once you reach the dam, and the rest of the descent through the undergrowth, winding along the hillside with no views, becomes a real ordeal at the end of the two-day Forges d'Orlu-Refuge d'en Beys-Return to Forges via the Naguille lake loop. It took us nearly three hours to complete this last section. In total, it takes a good eight hours for average hikers (not including lunch break). It's important to know this, to keep your patience and energy up to finish the loop, to try to remember the magnificent landscapes and views from the first part and to forget the last part of the descent, which is of no interest but seems essential in order to return to the starting point.

From the refuge to the Couillade d'en Beys (highest point): Difficult climb, not impossible but requiring considerable effort (with our trekking bags). Very busy. Magnificent views on both sides.

Then on the descent, there is no one else around. Everyone turns back to the refuge. A steep descent follows, not very long but steep, but still quite doable.

The rest is superb (up to the forest), with small lakes, ponds, snowfields, rocks to climb around, meadows, a stream, Lake Naguille, which is easy to get around, the dam, facilities, etc., all almost completely deserted (we did come across some people around the lake, but that was it). Very pleasant descent.

Then the forest, not very interesting apart from the shade it provides, very long with a huge drop... But that's the path.

We stopped at point 10. It took us just under 7 hours, including breaks, with 4 of us, including 2 young people aged 12 and 15, and with our trekking bags.

We did the outward journey the day before on this hike https://www.visorando.com/randonnee-d-or...
The two hikes combined are 23 km long, with a 1,300-metre elevation gain, and take about 10 hours including breaks. Be careful, you don't arrive at the starting point! (There are about 3 km left to reach the Fanguil car park where we parked.)

A superb hike.

A very beautiful hike, completed in 8.5 hours! Be aware of the time required. It was really a lot (too much?) for us, with a 1,600-metre descent.

We were slow on the first part up to point 5 (it took us 4 hours and 45 minutes, including about an hour's break) and we had to keep up the pace on the second part from point 5 to the end (it took us 3 hours and 45 minutes, with hardly any breaks) to catch the last shuttle bus to Ax-les-Thermes.

Please note that the yellow and red markings do not start at point 1, but after it (there is a sign indicating the continuation of the white and red markings on one side and the yellow and red markings on the other).

The section between points 7 and 8 (descent) is quite technical on the rocks, but fortunately quite short.

After point 8 and up to point 10, the descent through the woods is steady and pleasant, despite tired legs.
