In Poitiers

A very interesting and relatively easy route through the city.
This route allows you to explore part of the historic centre (Palais de Justice, Collège des Feuillants). Along the way, we pass the theatre, the François Mitterrand media library, as well as some of Poitiers’ newer neighbourhoods (the Mérigotte neighbourhood, currently being expanded, Bellejouanne and Saint Cyprien). We walk along the River Le Clain, where we can see the old tramway tracks.

I was rather disappointed by this walk, which takes you through some rather uninteresting neighbourhoods; it would make more sense to do a detailed route of the old town, which is well worth a visit. The staff at the tourist office gave some very good advice.

In my opinion, it would be worth altering the route between points 2 and 3 so that it passes through the Aboville neighbourhood (where there is a map and a signpost, and a lovely view) and then crosses the Clain via the footbridge at the courthouse (a magnificent building).

There are a few interesting spots in Poitiers that are little known (the banks of the Boivre, the remains of the ramparts, etc.), but there are also far too many uninteresting residential areas.
The walk would benefit from making better use of some of Poitiers’ more attractive areas (Clain in particular).

Our first exploration of Poitiers. Interesting, but ultimately not very easy to follow. The walk focuses heavily on the neighbourhoods, which is really surprising. We did the walk in the opposite direction to finish up in Poitiers. You have to park quite a long way away, even though the city has no shortage of car parks. The neighbourhoods are all quite different, but to be honest it takes a long time and isn’t particularly interesting. Worth seeing are the footbridge over the railway line and the bridge over the Clain. But from there, you could probably do a round trip or a circular route along the Clain. After that, you find yourself back in a neighbourhood… with a detour we didn’t see the point of; cutting across Rue du Versant Ouest is enough. On the other hand, we discovered the steps on Solférino and took part of the GR to follow the Clain back. It would have been a shame to miss that. I think the town offers opportunities for a more balanced walk without ‘wasting’ time in uninteresting neighbourhoods. Taking the GR routes to walk to and from the Clain seems well worth doing.
Room for improvement
