Car park located at the large hairpin bend on the climb to Riboux, 3 km above Ok Corral.
(S/E) Head south-east, downhill, and follow a track for about 400 m.
(1) Turn left and take a descending path that cuts across the large bend in the track. Join the track (private property).
(2) Just before reaching it, take the dry stream bed which leads directly to the Bassin de la Perdrix (directions from Philou 26).
(3) You’ll arrive in a meadow with the Bassin de la Perdrix at the far end, a pond specially built for the film “Manon des Sources”. Just next to it, on the left, head down into the bed of a dry stream. Follow this stream (known as the Roque) for 1.5 km. Walking over large rocks is not particularly difficult. From time to time, a path allows you to avoid overly arduous terrain, as well as sections where gravel has been laid on the stream bed. Pretty rock pools adorn the bottom of the ravine, which is a pleasure to look at.
Walk alongside a field (without stepping onto the crops), then take a path on the left 100 m further on, clearly visible through the trees, and leave the meadow. You will then arrive at Jean de Florette’s country house (Château Renard). Private property – please respect the site!
(4) Take the track heading east.
(5) About 300 m past the country house, turn right and follow a track for 700 m. You will then come within sight of a field of solar panels. Walk along the edge of this field, then continue along the track towards the south-west. Please note that the eastern side is private property.
(6) Turn left here and continue for 600 m until you reach a steep concrete descent leading to a crossroads.
(7) Follow the path on the left. About 300 m further on, take a clearly visible, steep path on the right. This path leads to the Mauregoun plateau. Ignore a turn-off on the left and you will soon reach a junction with a path on the right.
(8) Continue straight on and, after about 250 m, you will reach the cave known as Manon’s Cave (Grotte du Mounoï), which is a few metres off the path to the left (cairn). The scenes from the film were shot at the back of the cave, which had been filled with water by the fire brigade after the floor had been lined with straw.
(9) Retrace your steps.
(8) Go down a path on the left and arrive at a clearing, known as Vieux Mounoï, with an old well and a ruin. Take the path on the right, heading due west, keeping to the right to return to a crossroads you have already passed.
(7) Turn left onto the path heading south-west. At the very end lies the plain of the memorial known as the “Charnier de Signes” or Vallon des Martyrs; here, around fifty members of the Resistance were shot by the Nazis at the end of the Second World War.
(10) At the left-hand bend in the track, take the grassy path on the right which climbs over a small hill and descends into a valley. Take care: the slope is slippery due to the stones. In the valley, turn right and, 200 m further on, you will come to the fork you passed on the way there.
(2) Follow the path back in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).
