Description of the walk

For this hike, go to the village of Riboux at the foot of the south face of Sainte-Baume. Park in the car park at the entrance to the village.

(S/E) Head east and follow the tarmac road that climbs towards Pé de la Colle without leaving it. Stay on the tarmac and do not take any other paths, either to the right or left. After heading due north, turn north-east and go through a first left-right bend. Further on, go through a hairpin bend on the right.

(1) A few dozen metres after the hairpin bend, take a path on the left, first heading north-north-west and then north. Pass under a power line and continue up a steep climb. Looking back, you can admire the panorama of the entire southern part. Turn right at the hairpin bend (hunting lookout post on the right) and arrive at the first intersection.

(2) Turn sharply left. Continue climbing through the scrub and pass close to large rocks that appear to have been carved by human hands (photos).

(3) When you reach a cairn, the path winds through the scrub on the right. At this point, the climb becomes steeper and the path narrower, leading to an intersection with a path marked in yellow.

(4) Turn left and follow the markings all the way to Col du Saint-Pilon (360° panorama).

(5) Take theGR®98on the left, heading west. Pass close to the chapel and follow the Sainte-Baume ridge without leaving it until you reach Col du Fauge. After the chapel, there are beautiful views of the north-facing cliff. Feel free to get closer, the overhangs are very impressive (but be careful).
Pass the Pas de la Cabre and then a military site, which you can bypass by walking along the fence.

(6) At Col du Fauge, turn right towards Pic de Bertagne, following the yellow markings. At the summit, enjoy panoramic views over the entire Gémenos valley, Aubagne, the Étoile massif, Galaban, and more.

(7) Retrace your steps back to the Col du Fauge.

(6) At the pass, turn right (south) onto the path that descends steeply towards Col de l'Aigle, still following the GR®.

(8) At the Col de l'Aigle, leave theGR® and take the wide track that branches off to the left and stay on it.

(9) At the intersection, turn left and continue along this wide path, without leaving it. Pass in front of Jas de Sylvain (photos), leaving it on your left.

(10) At the crossroads (cistern), continue along the track to the east (first left). Cross two streams and then pass under a power line. Pass above Jas de Frédéric on the right (photos). Do not leave the wide track, continuing straight ahead.

(11) You will come to a crossroads at an elevation of 634 metres, after Jas de Frédéric. Continue straight ahead, ignoring the path that veers off to the right. Immediately after, ignore the path that veers off to the left. After a right-hand bend, stay on the main path, heading south-east.

(12) At a crossroads with a cistern opposite, turn sharply left. You will pass a path on the right and another on the left; ignore them and continue to the next crossroads. Follow the track on the right.

(13) When you reach a bend, take the path that descends through the woods on your left, marked by a cairn. Be careful, as deforestation makes the path difficult to identify.

(14) At the next intersection, take a deforestation path on the right for a few metres. Immediately take the first path on the left to reach a magnificent clearing. Stay on the path that descends through the woods and leads to an intersection.

(15) Turn left again to rejoin the tarmac road that climbs up to Riboux.

(16) Take the road on the left and you will find yourself back at the car park (S/E).

Very beautiful hike, well marked.
After a steady climb, magnificent 360° views.
A beautiful route along the ridges and a fairly easy descent.
As described, it is slightly difficult to find the path that leads back to the starting point.
Lots of people on 1 May at St Pilon, then almost no one on the ridges and the descent.
Bring enough water (I managed with the 2 litres I had planned and it was enough).
7 hours, including 5 hours and 40 minutes of actual walking.

very beautiful hike.
Be careful on days when the mistral wind is blowing.
No water sources except for one spring on the descent from Pic de Bertagne.

A beautiful hike with magnificent 360-degree views of the sea and countryside along the entire ridge.
It's a shame that the mist on the horizon spoils the picture postcard view a little.
The main difficulty is the distance, with the route sometimes a little rough, so make sure you wear good shoes.
Estimated duration in the description, including stops.
A wonderful discovery of the beautiful village of Riboux, both close by and lost in the middle of the mountains.
Don't hesitate...

The first part of the circuit (Dép - pt1) is not particularly interesting but allows you to warm up. Things get tougher from pt 1 onwards with a climb of almost 340m. Once you reach the Col du Saint Pilon, the view is magnificent both to the south (the islands, the sea, Mont Caume, Notre Dame du Mai, etc.) and to the north (Mercantour, Sainte Victoire, etc.). Be careful of the wind because even though it was only blowing at 70 km/h, there is practically no shelter until the Col de Fauge and at times it is difficult to stabilise. The viewpoint at the Col de Bertagne is worth the detour but it is very exposed to the wind! The return journey from the Col de Fauge to Riboux is not difficult, except for the small stones that roll under your shoes. A superb hike with beautiful views, but beware of the wind.

I agree with the previous comments: a beautiful hike (protected from the mistral wind on the ascent and descent, but be careful on the ridges!) with a few tricky sections during the traverse (sharp limestone pavement), but very beautiful views.

A beautiful route with magnificent views across the entire region
Avoid on windy days (it blows quite hard on the ridge) and/or rainy days (slipping is guaranteed on the limestone slabs).
After the descent, the return to Riboux via the DFCI is less interesting.
Note the nice little bar/restaurant in the car park, where you can refresh yourself on arrival

My favourite in 2022 is, in my opinion, the most beautiful walk in the region (and I think I've done quite a few).
The first climb is pleasant but not difficult.
And when you reach Saint Pilon, the view is exceptional. An incredible view to the south and north and impressive cliffs.
Surprisingly, the most difficult part is on the ridge. There are no big climbs or descents, but a large part of the route is on rock with holes and a slight slope. Watch your ankles.
Don't forget to go to Pic de Bertagne, the views are worth the detour (Ste Victoire, hills above Auriol, etc.).

After that, it gets more complicated. The descent is steep, on slippery earth and stones, and the path back to the foot of Sainte Baume is long and uninteresting, except for the two jas.

Thank you again for this beautiful route.

Best regards
Alain

We did this hike as a family with two children aged 8 and 11 without any problems, apart from the walking time, which is quite long. The first part of the hike is pleasant, ending at the ridges where the view is fabulous! We were lucky enough to see some goats near St Pilon. From St Pilon onwards, the path is more uneven and you have to follow the markings carefully. Near the Col du Fauge, you have to walk along rusty fences with a view of antennas and concrete structures, which spoils the route a little. The descent from the Col du Fauge is mostly on a very wide track, sometimes under high-voltage power lines, with nothing of particular interest except for two well-preserved sheep pens. A good family outing to discover Sainte Baume.

Had a wonderful hike today in perfect weather conditions.
Avoid going on a Thursday because there is a hunt very close to the path that goes uphill. (I went back today as a result.) There is also hunting on Mondays, Saturdays and Sundays in Riboux.
I can confirm that at the end of the route, there is a prohibited passage on private property. I was able to get around it by turning back on the track.
The passage over the ridges and the beginning of the descent are quite challenging, so you have to watch your step.

hike done on 28/11/2021. I can confirm that in strong winds it is very, very difficult at the top of the ridges, certainly over 100km/h. It is difficult to stand up. We shortened the walk by going through the yellow-marked valley of the Baumissard cistern, which is also very beautiful. Otherwise, the views from the ridges are breathtaking

Magnificent hike, very busy car park at the start, but few people on the ridges, fantastic views to the north and south of the massif, shame the visibility wasn't very good.
Good climb after leaving the road, rough terrain, but the site is pleasant. The trails coming from the north are currently closed due to construction work. See the Regional Park website.
Surprise, the noise: the nearby Castellet circuit emits a very noticeable mechanical sound throughout the hike.

A somewhat long hike, but not too difficult. The ridge section is very pleasant. Lunch at Pic de Bertagne on a sunny, windless day, with no crowds during the week. Splendid view.

A very beautiful, well-marked hike to do on a day without much wind. The ridge crossing is pleasant, with beautiful views. The north-facing overhang is indeed impressive.

A pleasant route that is not particularly difficult for hikers, best done in good weather with no wind. The passage along the ridge is enjoyable, with beautiful views and an impressive overhang.
On the way back, be careful at the end of the route between points 15 and 16, where the path is a private road closed by a gate. You can easily get through the vegetation and rejoin the route. The owners I saw would like people to show a little more respect for their property ("papers, rubbish"), message conveyed
