Departure from the car park between the church and the town hall of Aulhat-Saint-Privat.
(S/E) Head towards the church, then, with your back to the church entrance, cross the small square opposite, to the right of the fountain, then follow the street to the right towards "Les Parapheux". After 100 metres, turn right again and follow the road. There is no danger as it is not very busy. At the white cross, continue straight ahead, still in the direction of "Les Parapheux". There is a beautiful view of the Château de Péchaud on the hill opposite. When you reach "Les Parapheux", go straight ahead and follow the dirt track. At a fork, turn left.
(1) At the next crossroads, continue straight ahead, slightly to the left, then pass two successive paths on the right. You will come out onto a road next to the hamlet of Les Bas Maisons.
(2) Turn left and cross the bridge, passing a road on your right at a cross that leads to the hamlet of La Roche Blanche, and continue straight through the hamlet of Les Fougères. Continue straight ahead on the wide path.
(3) At the first crossroads, turn right and reach the hamlet of La Suchère, the highest point of the hike, which is a good place to take a break and admire the view. (Restored ruins of a medieval castle and enamelled lava plaque on the three castles of Aulhat and Saint Privat).
(4) After the hamlet, turn left onto a grassy path that goes straight across the fields to join a road below.
(5) Once you reach the road, continue straight ahead to the centre of the hamlet of La Malcourtie (fountain), then continue straight ahead to the crossroads of four streets. Follow Chemin des Écoliers opposite to reach the D9, which crosses the village of Flat.
Follow it to the right until you reach the war memorial, cross the road, pass the war memorial and take Rue du 19 Mars. When you reach a five-way crossroads, go straight on along Impasse de la Garde. At the right-hand bend, continue straight on along the path until you reach the next road (D113).
(6) Turn left to return to Aulhat. View of the exterior of the 17th-century castle.
(7) About 50 metres before the stop sign, turn right. Enter the first courtyard of the château, which is open to the public. Turn left between the buildings and cross the second courtyard, continuing to follow the road and passing under the porch. Back on the road that crosses the village, turn right to return to the church and the car park (S/E).
