White water walk in Ceyssat

In the village of Ceysat, there are numerous hydraulic structures: ponds, fountains, drinking troughs, wash houses, all made of Volvic stone, and even a mineral water spring!

Description of the walk

In Ceyssat, in the town centre, park in the car park near the library (hiking sign and fountain opposite, on the other side of the road).

This walk is not signposted

(S/E) Cross the road towards the fountain, turn left to pass in front of the hiking sign (which does not apply to this walk), then turn right onto the grass towards the children's playground and leave the playground on your left to reach the small spring pool. Go around it on the left and take the path through the woods behind it.

You will come to a street opposite a fountain and a mini wash house. Turn right. Ignore the dead end on the left and continue left along Rue des Fétians. You will come to a wider street opposite a renovated communal oven.

(1) Follow the street to the left, then at the fork (note the fountain on the left), turn right onto Rue de la Fontaine. Further on, you will arrive between a wash house (on the left) and a circular fountain (on the right).

(2) Retrace your steps back to the renovated oven.

(1) Continue straight ahead on the street until you reach the crossroads with a weighing scale (painted red) and a cross. Turn left and walk about 50 metres to find a fountain on the left side of the road. Cross the road and turn right, walking a few metres.

Turn left onto Rue de la Bascule. At the T-junction, turn right (note the fountain and mini wash house on the right shortly afterwards), join the main street of the village and turn left to find the library car park immediately.

(S/E) Cross the road again towards the fountain, turn left to pass the hiking sign again and continue straight ahead for a few dozen metres to reach the Source Foker spring (information sign), just after crossing Rue Saint-Roch.

Then follow Rue Saint-Roch, pass to the right of the church, ignore Rue des Lavoirs on the left and continue straight ahead, ignoring the streets that branch off to the left, Rue des Girots, until you reach the oven of the same name and its fountain (information panel).

(3) Retrace your steps and go down Rue des Lavoirs on the right. After about twenty metres, before reaching the large mission cross, turn onto the grass on the right of the street to reach a large wash house set back from the road on a branch of the Ceyssat stream.

Return to the road and continue opposite, still on the grass, to the left of the large cross, to reach another wash house, located just below the church. Walk along the wash house and climb up a winding path to Rue Saint-Roch. Follow it to the right and, taking the opposite route to the outward journey, return to the library car park (S/E).

In the commune of Ceysat, there are numerous hydraulic structures, including ponds, fountains, drinking troughs and wash houses, all built from Volvic stone.
The Foker Spring has a very modest but constant flow. The water is very rich in iron and slightly sparkling. It contains 6.5 g of mineral salts, including just over 1 g of sulphur and 0.7 g of calcium, with nearly 1200 ml of dissolved carbon dioxide per litre. Don't resist the pleasure of tasting real natural mineral water, but in moderation, as it is not labelled as drinkable!

Water is everywhere in the town, which has numerous springs and fountains. In fact, Ceyssat could have been home to thermal baths, but the project never came to fruition. An English company wanted to invest in the town to create a spa resort. After a bitter administrative battle, it was the town of Châtel-Guyon that benefited from this creation. In any case, Ceyssat partially supplies water to the town of Chamalières.

A great idea for discovering all the fountains, springs, drinking troughs and wash houses in Ceyssat. They are all very different from one another and well preserved.
Thank you for this route.
