Olby lime tree, Château d'Allagnat, springs and fountains

A walk mainly along small roads (very quiet) and paths to discover the small-scale heritage linked to water in a few hamlets and villages on the Plateau des Dômes, which are also rich in traditional houses, often beautifully restored. Along the way, you’ll also discover a Sully lime tree and a Troubadour-style castle (which is best seen in winter).

Description of the walk

In Ceyssat, park in one of the spaces available near the town hall, the fire station and the school sports ground.

(S/E) In front of the town hall, turn right to immediately find the Source Foker refreshment bar (information sign). Immediately after, turn left onto Rue Saint-Roch. Note the red and white GR® markings, which you should follow unless otherwise indicated. Leave the church on your left and, at the next junction, turn left down Rue des Lavoirs for about thirty metres to see two wash houses: one, next to the Ruisseau de Ceyssat spring fountain on the right, and the other on the opposite side of the road, below the church. After retracing your steps, turn left onto Rue des Girots. You will soon come to a crossroads with a cross in the middle, and the Girots oven and wash-house fountain on the right (information panel).

(1) Continue to the right along Chemin de la Clidère, then go straight on at the next junction.

(2) At the bend in the road to the right, take the path on the left.

(3) At the T-junction with a path, continue left. Further on, ignore a path on the right, then you’ll reach a road at a hiking signpost.

(4) Follow it to the left. You will soon cross over the Ruisseau de Ceyssat. Continue along the road to the Olby cemetery. Leave the GR® markings here.

(5) Cross the road and follow Rue des Combes, which starts at the corner of the cemetery, to reach the village centre. Turn right onto the first street, Grand’rue, then right again onto Rue des Granges at the next junction. Then turn left to reach the church. Climb a few steps to reach the majestic Sully lime tree.

(6) Retrace your steps, go back down the steps and turn right, then immediately left onto Rue du Paradis. At the T-junction, turn right, then left about twenty metres further on, onto Rue de la Croix de Bey.

(7) At the junction, continue straight on, still on Rue de la Croix de Bey (sports ground on your right). Ignore the side paths and stay on this small road until you come to a path at a small cross, the Croix de Bey.

(8) Follow the path to the left, then, at the fork shortly afterwards, keep to the right.

(9) Further on, cross a road and continue along the small road opposite. Ignore a path on the left further on. Ignore a road on the left as you reach the hamlet of Chez Pierre. Continue along the street; you will soon see a leat on your right and an information board about the old mills.

(10) For now, ignore an old road that branches off to the right in a hairpin bend; you’ll take this later. Just after this, take a short detour to the right to see a restored wash house. Then continue along the road to the junction and turn right onto Rue de la Source until you reach the Chez Pierre water intake (information sign). Retrace your steps.

(10) Follow the old road to the left, which climbs to overlook the hamlet before taking a wide left-hand bend. You’ll come to a fork in the road.

(11) Take the left-hand path through the woodland. It leads to a road at a place called Trézaret.

(12) Continue straight on along this road, ignoring all the roads to the right or left, until you reach the entrance to the village of Allagnat. From this road, you have lovely views of Allagnat Castle.

(13) At the fork in the road, opposite a house and with the village noticeboard on your right, take the road on the right. Ignore a road on the right and continue uphill. Ignore a path on the right at a bend. Before joining the D52, follow a tree-lined path on the left, at the edge of a meadow. You will come out onto the D52. Follow it to the left, passing the entrance to the castle grounds.

(14) Turn left onto the street towards the town centre, walking past the church on your left. You’ll reach a crossroads by a large mission cross. A well-preserved blacksmith’s workshop lies below on the left. Keep to the right. Further on, at the Allagnat hiking signpost, turn right onto Rue de la Garde. You will come out onto the D52 again. Cross over and take Rue Puy Meunier opposite.

(15) At the crossroads by the Puy Meunier signpost, continue straight on towards Montmeyre. At the fork in the road, turn left (yellow markings) and you will immediately come to another path marked GR® (red and white); follow these markings until otherwise indicated. Continue to the left.

(16) Cross the D52 and follow the road opposite to enter Montmeyre. Ignore the road on the left at the blacksmith’s house (information panel, shoeing bench). Further on, pass a large drinking fountain on your left, followed by a large wash house. Continue along this main street as it winds through the hamlet.

(17) Further on, walk past the drinking fountain in the village square (note the large enamelled washbasin of the former Auberge du Coq). Continue along the road leading down towards the village of Ceyssat. At the T-junction, first turn right then left. Pass a fountain and a tiny wash house on your right, then you’ll reach the crossroads by the war memorial. Turn left and head towards a large drinking fountain. A short detour to the right allows you to see the Source Foker basin. Then head towards the town hall by crossing Rue Saint-Roch, before returning to your car park (S/E).
