Description of the walk

When coming to Brioude from the N102 via the D588 (Avenue de Lamothe), park in the car park at the foot of the wall that marks the eastern boundary of the village, on the edge of Rue des Fossés Saint-Joseph.

(S/E) Head towards the wall, climb the stairs to the left of the lift, and you will come out on Rue des Fossés Saint-Joseph. First turn right then left to follow Avenue Joseph Lhomenède, which is enclosed by walls. At the end of the wall, turn right and immediately take a few steps to the right to reach the promenade which, at the top of the wall, crosses the Esplanade de Verdun on the left. Go to the end of the promenade, go down a few steps and you will come out onto Rue du Levant.

Turn left onto the wide tarmac area and continue along the alleyway. You will come to a crossroads with Rue de la République on your left and Rue du 14 Juillet on your right. Walk a few metres along Rue de la République until you reach a beautiful old house, then turn back and take the first street on the left (Rue Pascal, tourist information signs). Turn left onto Rue Sidoine Apollinaire and you will arrive at the back of the Basilica of Saint-Julien, opposite the old grain markets (Place Grégoire de Tours).

(1) Turn right to walk along the basilica on your left, pass under the archway and arrive in front of the entrance to the basilica. A visit is a must. On leaving, go straight on to Rue du Chapitre. On the small square, note the beautiful turreted mansion opposite, the Hôtel Gueffier de Talairat (17th century). Turn left and immediately take the street on the left (Rue du Quatre Septembre) at the corner of a beautiful corbelled house (tourist information sign, direction Maison de Mandrin). You will arrive at another small square . Notice the Maison de Mandrin (15th century) on your left. Continue straight ahead on Avenue du 4 Septembre. Notice a half-timbered house on your right. You will arrive at a small square, Place de Mazel, with a house featuring a turret.

(2) Take a few steps to the right and look up to see a beautiful old window frame. Retrace your steps, leaving the tourist information sign, the house with a turret and a beautiful fountain on your right, and continue straight ahead (Rue Jules Maigne). You will come to an intersection with a stele and another house with a turret. Turn left onto Rue Savaron, which leads to the foot of the Basilica of Saint-Julien. Turn right under the arcades of the porch, leaving Rue du Marché on your right, and arrive at the square behind the basilica (Place Grégoire de Tours), near the old grain markets (tourist information signs). Follow Rue des Halles on the right, which leads back to Avenue Joseph Lhomenède. Turn left and follow this avenue straight ahead to leave the village and return to the car park on Rue des Fossés Saint-Joseph (S/E).

The Basilica of Saint-Julien alone is worth a detour to Brioude. Built in the Auvergne Romanesque style, it was constructed in the 11th and 12th centuries. It is one of the jewels of Romanesque art in the region. Pebble flooring, murals.

A lovely little walk in the town of Brioude with the children, very easy, and we were able to see the basilica, inside and out, which is truly magnificent.

The Basilica of Saint-Julien, with its remarkable polychrome chevet, Allier paving stones, floor mosaics, stained glass windows, statuary and crypt, is reason enough to visit Brioude. You can easily spend over an hour exploring it, such is its beauty.
