Pic du Montcalm via Riufret

The Riufret is the mountain route to the 3,000-metre peaks of the Ariège. Wild, impressive, rugged but supremely authentic. With a bit of luck, you may have some wonderful encounters and come across a few ibex.

Description of the walk

Access

On leaving Tarascon-sur-Ariège, head towards Vicdessos. Staying on the D8, pass through Vicdessos, Auzat, then Marc. In Marc, follow signs for Soulcem. Pass through Mounicou and continue along the tarmac road which crosses over the dam and runs alongside the lake. Park shortly after passing the lake, in the car park at Les Orris du Carla.

(S/E) Head back down to the road towards the lake. Cross the footbridge and follow the path that goes round the lake.

(1) Cross the stream, then head up the Riufret valley. The slope is steep, but a narrow path makes it possible to make your way up without too much difficulty.

(2) At around 2,400 m, the path crosses a vast grassy and rocky plateau. Further on, it descends to cross afirst valley, then a second one a little further on. Looking back down to the left, you can occasionally catch a glimpse of part of the Étang de Riufret. Continue climbing up the valley.

(3) At around 2,800 m, follow the path which veers slightly to the right towards the rocks. Once at the rocks, climb up to the left to the Col du Riufret (2,978 m).

(4) Turn left towards Pique d’Estats and Verdaguer. Follow the very well-marked path.

(5) On the path leading to Pique d’Estats, veer slightly to the left to reach Cap Coma de Riufred (3041 m).

(6) Continue towards Pique d’Estats until you reach a junction on the ridge.

(7) Turn left and reach the Pique d’Estats (3143 m).

(8) Descend back to the junction.

(7) Head straight ahead to reach the Pic de Verdaguer (3,131 m).

(9) Head back down to the junction.

(7) Return via the same route you took to Cap Coma de Riufret.

(6) Keep to the left to follow the path.

(5) Head back down to the Col du Riufret.

(4) Continue straight ahead to climb Montcalm (3077 m).

(10) Return to the Col du Riufret.

(4) Follow the same route back down as you took on the ascent to return to the car park where you started (S/E).

Notes

A long route with a very significant elevation gain.

Set off early to avoid descending the Vallon de Riufret at night. Although signposted, the path through the Vallon de Riufret can indeed be difficult to follow in poor visibility.

Follow the lakeside path, then the Green Circles and cairns throughout the ascent up the Riufret Valley.
A very busy path between the Pique d’Estats and the Pic du Montcalm.
Green Circles + cairns from the Col de Riufret to the Étang de Soucelm.

Walk completed three times in October. A little icy snow on the higher ground at the end of October.

Between 1 and 2, you have to be patient...

I agree with Hachail's opinion on the evolution of the scree on the climb to the pass. Slides have formed, quite loose, and during the last climb I had the impression that it had moved. Rockfalls, coming from the right and left. You have to look for the "path" on the right, green tracks and cairns not always visible. There is a slightly tricky rock passage before you reach the pass and climb up to it, but the effort is well rewarded by the view.

The trail is not very visible for Cap Coma and then towards Pique d'Estats on the very last climb.

Hike done on a beautiful autumn day. For me, this route to Montcalm is much more beautiful and wild than the classic climb via the lake and the Pinet refuge. We didn't go to Pique d'Estats (a summit I've climbed several times), and we reached Montcalm in 4 hours and 10 minutes (including stops)... but the descent was very long... 9 hours in total (including a nap).
Towards the end of the climb, before the Col du Riufret, there are sections of earthy scree, which I think will deteriorate over time and with the numerous passages of hikers and trail runners (this is the route of the PicAriège and PicaPICA ultras of the Montcalm Challenge). In any case, these sections are very difficult to climb, and I recommend using walking poles on the descent.
Many thanks to Visorandonneur for putting this beautiful route online.

Hikes done at the end of August; not many people as far as Riutret, but plenty coming from the other valley.
The route is well signposted with green or, occasionally, pink markers.
These are challenging hikes, with a few sections where you need to use your hands.
The estimated time of 10 hours for the route seems a bit exaggerated to me; 8 hours would be more appropriate.
