Ponte Olveira - Estorde

Third stage of the Camino Finisterre. After the magnificent River Xallas, which marks the start of this stage, the path becomes very pleasant. Dominated by wind turbines, it crosses expanses of heather, meadows and forests, sometimes of eucalyptus, sometimes of pine. Before reaching the Ria de Corcubión, the route takes you past the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Snows and over the O Cruceiro da Armada Pass.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: Le Cap Finisterre

Description of the walk

(S) From the rest area, return to the DP-3404 and turn left to cross the medieval bridge. Be careful, the road is narrow and there are no facilities for pedestrians. Pass through the hamlet of A Ponté Olveira and continue to the Fork in the road. Don’t miss the mosaic at the rest area.

(1) Stay on the DP-3404, heading west. Pass a large grain dryer, then continue through the maize fields to the junction.

(2) Continue straight on (north-west) towards Olveiroa until you reach a junction at the entrance to the town.

(3) Turn left, pass a grain dryer, then continue straight on past the Rústica As Pias bar/restaurant, surrounded by three grain dryers, before following a wall of large stones on your right. You’ll come to a wash house.

(4) Turn left onto the concrete path heading south-west and continue to the end of the path under the high-voltage power line.

(5) Turn right to reach a Fork in the road. Follow the path on the right (north-west) which climbs up to a high-voltage pylon.

(6) At the fork in the road, veer left to follow the ridge line, before descending the Olveiroa slope to the Vao de Ripas Bridge: a concrete footbridge over the Rio Hospital.

(7) Head south after the bridge to begin an ascent and continue to the junction.

(8) Head north up the increasingly steep slope. You will arrive at the hamlet of Logoso in front of a hostel.

(9) Continue climbing along a stony track, keeping north-west, until you reach a marker post in front of a low stone wall.

(10) Turn right to reach the outskirts of the village of Hospital, facing a lovely pilgrim information point. Turn left to pass in front of it and reach the DP-3404. Turn left again to follow this road. Continue until you reach Bar O Casteliño.

(11) Cross the DP-3404 carefully and follow the small, gently ascending road heading north. You will rejoin the DP-3404. Continue north-west towards Dumbria until you reach a roundabout, which is also the junction for Finisterra and Muxia. Here you can choose to go to Muxia or Finisterra

(12) If, like me, you choose to go to Finisterra, turn left (south-west) onto the DP-2302. Pass the entrance to a large metal carbide factory before reaching a junction.

(13) Head west to the Fork in the road, near the Pedra Ancha petroglyph site. Let your imagination run wild as you try to make out the shapes left by erosion.

(14) Continue straight on (west) to reach the area near the Statue of Curious Vákner, a mythological Galician monster. Carry on to the junction with the Marco do Couto Cross.

(15) Continue straight ahead along the gently ascending path that runs alongside a low stone wall, then the edge of a wood. Carry on to the Fork in the road.

(16) After a fork to the south-west, follow the edge of the woodland before crossing it to reach a junction.

(17) Turn right, then at the Fork in the road, head left (south-west) to reach the Chapel of Nosa Señora das Neves.

(18) Continue northwards, then, after a bend, head south-west, then north-west. Keep in this direction until you reach the Fork in the road.

(19) Head westwards to cross a wooded area before reaching a bend with a crossroads.

(20) Continue south-west to the path leading to the Chapel of San Pedro Mártir: drinking fountain on site.

(21) Continue down a gentle slope to the south-west until you reach the marker.

(22) Walk to the next boundary stone.

(23) Continue on to a bend and, at the Alto do Cruceiro da Armada marker: view of Cape Finisterre.

(24) Continue southwards and, after two successive changes of direction, you will arrive at the viewpoint of the Inmaculada Concepción.

(25) Continue down the hill, then turn left at the junction and carry on to the Fork in the road.

(26) At a hairpin bend, keep right on the descent and continue to the Stop sign. Turn right and descend to the Stop sign at the junction with the AC-550 in the town of Cée.

(27) Walk north-west. Enjoy the view of Cape Cée and continue to the cemetery.

(28) Continue along this road and walk to the Fuco Corbelle store: a supplier of building materials.

(29) Turn left onto Rúa da Mariña. Please note: at the junction with Rúa Magdalena, the signposting suggests you either turn left along the coast, as shown on the route, or right through the town.
Head left round the bend and go down to the roundabout.

(30) Turn right and cross the road carefully to walk along the coast on your left. At the park, stay on the pavement and walk along the park on your left. Pass two sculptures and go round the park to reach a roundabout.

(31) Continue straight on (south-west) along the beach on your left until you reach the Stop sign at the junction with the AC-445. Walk a few metres further and cross the road carefully.

(32) Turn right onto Rúa Cruceiro de Valdomar in the village of Corcubión. On the uphill stretch, pass a grain dryer and then, at the Fork in the road, take the right-hand Rúa Salvador Allende, going against the one-way flow. Please note: at the Fork in the road, a sign points towards the Camino de Santiago to the left; do not follow this direction. Follow the signs for Cuartel Garda Civil. Stay on this road, which continues as Rúa Santo Antonio, still uphill, until you reach the Chapel of Santo Antonio.

(33) Stay on Rúa Santo Antonio, which runs alongside a stone wall on your right, heading west. At the fork in the road, turn left and continue to the next fork in the road.

(34) Take the gravel track leading from a gate towards the south-west. A yellow arrow on the ground indicates you are heading in the right direction. You will pass through a wooded area with lovely views of the bay in the open sections, before arriving at a hamlet in Corcubión at the junction with Rúa Camiño do Carro.

(35) Turn right, pass a grain dryer and continue to the Stop sign at the junction with the AC-445.

(36) Cross this road carefully, then first turn right then left to continue south-west. Pass a small sports ground and, at the Fork in the road, take the middle path, marked by a boundary stone. Head downhill until you rejoin the AC-445 in the hamlet of Amarela.

(37) Turn left (north-west). Cross the road carefully as soon as possible to continue on the right-hand pavement and follow this road until you reach the start of an S-bend.

(38) Turn right and follow the bend to the left to join a path leading into the woods. Continue until you reach the AC-445 at a Stop sign.

(39) Head north , keeping to the hard shoulder, and continue until you reach the sign marking the entrance to the village of Estorde.

(40) Continue along the AC-445 to the entrance of the Ruta Finiterre campsite to set up camp for the night (E).
