From junction 17 of the A64 motorway, at Montréjeau, drive up the Garonne valley towards Spain on the N125. Watch out for the numerous speed cameras. Leave the N125 to the left at Ore and continue along the D618 to just below the Col des Ares. Park your car at this hunters’ car park rather than at the Col des Ares.
(S/E) Ignore the forest road leading back and head left, south-east, straight into the woods for 120 m. Join the path, marked in yellow, leading from the Col des Ares. Follow it to the right until you reach the four-way junction.
(1) Turn right towards the Col de la Serre and go past it.
(2) Head left, along the ridge, to Juan Malaut. You can see numerous palomiers.
(3) Descend to the Col du Hô.
(4) There are seven paths at this pass. Follow the second one on the left, heading uphill. Pass the Portail de Bardachine and join a good track at the Passage de Pontet.
(5) Head left for 600 m to Barbachine, at a hairpin bend.
(6) Leave the track and take a small, fairly steep path on your right which follows the Moncaup Stream upstream and leads to the Cabane du Pic du Gar.
(7) Then head up towards the Pic du Gar, following a path that branches off to the left, heading south-east, then north-east, before turning south-east again to the summit of the Pic du Gar (which has no cross but offersmagnificent views of the Luchonnais peaks).
(8) Descend via a short circular loop to the left, then continue down to a fork.
(9) Continue straight ahead and climb Pic Saillant.
(10) Head back down to the previous fork.
(10) Turn left and head down to the Cabane du Pic du Gar.
(7) Head left and follow the yellow markings below the shepherd’s huts. This part of the descent is very pleasant and straightforward. Join a wide track.
(11) Follow it to a Y-junction (elevation 1113).
(12) Turn sharply right. Descend gently to the Col du Hô.
(4) Continue along the correct track, heading north-west, until you reach (S/E).
