Circular route from the Col des Ares to the Pic du Gar and Pic Saillant

A very beautiful hike from the Col des Ares. The route remains shaded all the way to the Cabane du Pic du Gar. Classified as a difficult hike due to the elevation gain, but there are no technical difficulties.

Description of the walk

From junction 17 of the A64 motorway, at Montréjeau, drive up the Garonne valley towards Spain on the N125. Watch out for the numerous speed cameras. Leave the N125 to the left at Ore and continue along the D618 to just below the Col des Ares. Park your car at this hunters’ car park rather than at the Col des Ares.

(S/E) Ignore the forest road leading back and head left, south-east, straight into the woods for 120 m. Join the path, marked in yellow, leading from the Col des Ares. Follow it to the right until you reach the four-way junction.

(1) Turn right towards the Col de la Serre and go past it.

(2) Head left, along the ridge, to Juan Malaut. You can see numerous palomiers.

(3) Descend to the Col du Hô.

(4) There are seven paths at this pass. Follow the second one on the left, heading uphill. Pass the Portail de Bardachine and join a good track at the Passage de Pontet.

(5) Head left for 600 m to Barbachine, at a hairpin bend.

(6) Leave the track and take a small, fairly steep path on your right which follows the Moncaup Stream upstream and leads to the Cabane du Pic du Gar.

(7) Then head up towards the Pic du Gar, following a path that branches off to the left, heading south-east, then north-east, before turning south-east again to the summit of the Pic du Gar (which has no cross but offersmagnificent views of the Luchonnais peaks).

(8) Descend via a short circular loop to the left, then continue down to a fork.

(9) Continue straight ahead and climb Pic Saillant.

(10) Head back down to the previous fork.

(10) Turn left and head down to the Cabane du Pic du Gar.

(7) Head left and follow the yellow markings below the shepherd’s huts. This part of the descent is very pleasant and straightforward. Join a wide track.

(11) Follow it to a Y-junction (elevation 1113).

(12) Turn sharply right. Descend gently to the Col du Hô.

(4) Continue along the correct track, heading north-west, until you reach (S/E).

We started off on a beautiful hike in the cool, misty morning, but the sun was waiting for us at the foot of Pic du Gar. We couldn't climb it because a Patou sheepdog dissuaded us (he was doing his job, guarding his flock), so we had a picnic at the top of Pic Saillant, enjoying the sunshine and a magnificent 360° view. We also really enjoyed the descent through the forest, which was magical at times. Three short hours to climb up, two to climb down, plus the picnic, made for six hours of pure pleasure. Thank you, Visorando

A slight variation: descending from Pic du Saillant, we went to Pic du Creps and rejoined the route by following the edge of the ridge.

A lovely hike in beautiful, sunny weather, although the climb through the woods and up the north face was challenging
On reaching the Pic du Gar hut, the path is barely marked, so you have to follow the trail off the beaten track
The view over the valleys and of Mount Aneto from the summits of the two peaks is superb, hence the importance of doing this hike in good weather
The return journey to the Col de Ho through the woods and along the forest track is of little interest

A lovely walk this Sunday morning. It took three hours to climb up and less than two hours to come down. The forest was beautiful and the view from the top of the two peaks is magnificent. The climb is challenging, but the descent is gentle.

A challenging route, but well worth the effort once you reach the two summits. The return journey is long and not particularly interesting, with too much forest track.
A hike I would recommend.

It took us three hours to climb up to the summit of Saillan via the summit of Gar
The climb is demanding
The route is well signposted, however, during the descent there is an option to take a shortcut from the described route by following the yellow markings.
The final part of the descent is along a forest road, which is less interesting.
The hike took us 5½ hours and is demanding.
