Pic de Cabaillère

The hike is not particularly difficult, but it is quite steep overall.
Please note: good mountain navigation skills are necessary; using a map or GPS is not a luxury and will help you find your way more easily.
The view from the summit is superb, as is the view along the climb, with views of the beautiful Jasse de Pinet, the Pic du Ruhle and its refuge, the Pic de la Coume d'Enfer, etc.

Description of the walk

To reach the starting point at the Pla de Las Peyres car park, leave Aston and head towards Refuge du Ruhle. The car park is about 15km away. You will need to pass the Étang de Laparan lake and its large dam.

(S/E) From the Pla de Las Peyres car park, cross the small bridge over the Coume de Varilhes stream and take the path on the left bank. This first part is very easy, with very little climbing.

(1) After passing the crossroads and leaving the path that descends from the Étangs de Fontargente on your left, and just before a small enclosure, turn right off the path to join the unmarked path a little higher up.
Caution: The slope is steep and the path is not visible at first. Reach a flat area.

(2) Continue until you reach a huge rock on the edge of the path.

(3) Go around the rock and follow the path that branches off to the left. Cross the mountain pasture, and don't hesitate to use your GPS to stay on the right track.

(4) The path climbs steeply among the rocks, with no particular difficulties except for a steep slope, but the scenery is worth the effort. You will arrive at a tiny pond fed by a few small streams.

(5) Turn right to arrive directly at the beautiful Étang Noir de Cabaillère. Walk along the right side of the pond and begin the climb. The slope becomes very steep until you reach a wide ridge at the foot of Pic de Cabaillère, which offers a sublime landscape. On your left, you will see the final slope (very steep and very rocky) that leads to the summit of the peak.

(6) On the ridge, turn left onto the steep slope described above. At the top of this climb, you will see the cairn marking the summit of Pic de Cabaillère. The rest is easy, with a gentle slope but littered with sheep droppings, as sheep seem to be particularly fond of this peak.

(7) The cairn marks the summit, from which the view is simply splendid. You can see Saint-Barthélémy and the Luzenac talc quarry. Then begin the descent to the Étang de Mirabail, which is not particularly difficult to reach. Just be careful as the descent is steep in places.

(8) Walk along the lake to reach the Ruisseau de la Coume de Varilhes stream.

(9) Continue to the left, north-east, following the stream downhill to reach the initial crossroads.

(1) Continue to the right, then immediately to the left. The return to the Pla de Las Peyres car park (S/E) is always via the left bank of the Coume de Varilhes stream.

A real treat. Hike completed on 10 October, in mild weather. 5 hours and 20 minutes of actual walking. 8 hours in total including breaks. The scenery is really worth seeing. The autumn colours were very pretty. I didn't meet anyone else on the whole route. This was my first time hiking without markings, but it didn't bother me. Most of the time, you can recognise the path by the slightly flattened grass... I had a few moments of doubt, but the GPS track helped me. No particular technical difficulties, I highly recommend this hike. Thank you for sharing!
Be aware that this is a dead zone. There is no network coverage anywhere in the area. Perfect for truly disconnecting... and reconnecting with nature.

Poorly marked trail. Don't hesitate to take the path that suits you best. Beautiful view at the top.

We did this route for the second time (first route on 18/08/2023). To add some variety, we did the circular route from point 1 to point 9 to go directly to Lake Mirabail. This long circular route is best done in summer to take advantage of the long days. As most of the route is unmarked, a GPS is essential. At this time of year, the snow at high altitude made the hike a little more difficult, but it was still very enjoyable as the view from the top of Cabaillère is magnificent!

The route without GPS is quite difficult to follow, so be warned...
There are no cairns along the route. We only met three people doing the route in the same direction.
There were people in the car park, but they were going to Fontargente...
A very beautiful walk with magnificent views from the summit.

Hike done the old-fashioned way: map and compass. The description is spot on. A very beautiful hike with several secluded ponds. I recommend it for those who love steep slopes. Note: there are snowfields below the final ridge line between points 5 and 6, so you have to take another couloir further north.

I did this hike on 1 August 2020. GPS is very useful for finding the trail, which sometimes disappears completely. We only met two fishermen returning from Lake Cabaillère, but no other hikers. The route is not easy but very pleasant, with superb views of the surrounding peaks and lakes. The return trip is a bit long, but it's true that we had rain and fog.
I measured a 905 m elevation gain and 12.1 km. I spent 9 hours on this hike with 5 hours and 20 minutes of actual walking, so there were a lot of stops. Overall, it was a very beautiful hike.
