Pic de Bertagne and geological features from the Parc de Saint-Pons

Undeniably one of the most beautiful hikes in the Bouches-du-Rhône. This circular hike combines enchanting scenery with geological curiosities. From the Parc de Saint-Pons, the route first passes through a cool, verdant woodland before reaching more open, rocky landscapes. Your gaze will frequently turn towards the Pic de Bertagne, the department’s highest peak at 1,042 metres. A hike along the Sainte-Baume range, taking in industrial ruins, white water and spectacular views of the Provençal mountains.

Description of the walk

Park at the Parc de Saint-Pons car park.

(S/E) Follow the path, keeping the Torrent du Fauge on your left. Walk past the Maison du Parc, cross the picnic areas and then carefully cross the D2 road. Walk along the small meadow on your right, follow the path as it bends to the left and heads back towards the old paper mill.

(1) Head towards Le Paradou and walk through the ruins of the old mill. At the exit, take the wide path on the right running alongside the Torrent du Fauge and lined with tall ash trees.

(2) Walk past the remains of the Moulin du Foulon, continue straight on to reach the Moulin Vieux, also known as the Moulin de Cuges, with its moss-covered waterfall.

(3) Turn right, then immediately left to discover the Source de Saint-Pons, and continue on.

(4) Walk past the ruins of Saint-Pons Abbey. Then take the stairs on the right which pass under the Fauge footbridge. Cross the wooden bridge and follow the path to admireone of the most beautiful waterfalls on the hike. Back on the track, turn right.

(5) Take the wide tarmac path (Allée des Plâtrières) heading north-west, towards La Glacière. The GRP®2013 joins the route: yellow and red markings.

(6) About fifty metres before the remains of a plaster works, take the path leading down to the right which runs alongside the Torrent du Fauge. Follow it to the end to discover a magnificent waterfall.

(7) Turn back to return to the Allée des Plâtrières.

(6) Continue along the right-hand route.

(8) At the junction (where there is an underground cistern), leave the GRP® and take the path on the right, heading towards the Glacière via the Vallon du Fauge. Ruins appear on the right below. Continue along this route, which alternates between flat sections, woodland, scree and rocky slabs.

(9) Take a look at the remains of the old ice house, surrounded by a safety barrier: take care, risk of falling. Then continue towards the Col de Bertagne along a steep path heading north-east and reach the monument to the Excursionnistes Marseillais.

(10) Turn right and continue the climb, following the yellow markings. The path first runs through the trees and then out into the open, with a few steep sections requiring you to use your hands. Join the tarmac road leading to the Civil Aviation site.

(11) Head right towards the radar. Just before the site’s gate, follow the path on the left marked in yellow. At the end of this path, enjoy a breathtaking view of the main mountain ranges of Provence.

(12) Turn around and head back along the road to a remarkable Scots pine.

(11) Take the path on the right leading down towards the Col du Fauge.

(13) Turn right onto the PR® signposted "Saint-Pons via the Vallon du Fauge": steep descent. At the bottom of the descent, join another PR®.

(14) Follow it by turning left.

(15) At this point, dotted yellow markings on the ground indicate a short climbing section requiring the use of your hands: proceed with great caution. Continue the descent and remain alert as you reach a cairn.

(16) Turn right and continue to the first cairn you come to.

(17) Turn right again and follow the cairns to the Trou du Vent, situated at the edge of the Cugens Cliff.

(18) Turn back.

(17) Resume the route to the right and head towards the junction with the GR®98.

(19) Head right to follow the GR®98. Then head south along the Vallon de Cabrelle and come out at a crossroads.

(20) Turn left then head straight on, due south, along a path that serves as a shortcut and rejoins the GR® further down. Turn right, come out onto another cross-path and follow it to the right for a few dozen metres to reach a junction.

(21) Head to the right.

(22) Take a short detour to the right leading to an impressive waterfall, then continue down the path to reach the Moulin Vieux.

(3) Turn left and retrace your steps in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

Notes

The climbs may seem tough, some of them rivalling those in the high mountains. But the most beautiful views have to be earned.

Worth a visit

  • Saint-Pons Departmental Park: a valley shaped by water where agriculture and industry flourished, of which numerous remains still stand (mills, factories, an abbey). The Fauge and its waterfalls bring the area to life, the purity of the water evident in the presence of red algae typical of Alpine torrents.
  • Pic de Bertagne.
  • Trou du Vent: a naturally pierced rock
