I did this hiking trail from 17 to 19 June 2025 for my first bivouac. What a pleasure, thank you so much! I had a wonderful time. I would say that my hiking level is average. But above all, I had never walked with a 14-kilo bag before. So I preferred to do this circuit over three days instead of two. It seemed like a good compromise. I really took my time for this first experience. Lots of photo breaks, water, yum yum. DAY 1: 3 hours' drive from my home to the starting point, hike started at 3pm. Arrival at the Camporells refuge in the evening around 6.30pm. DAY 2: walk from 9.30am to 4pm, arrival at the En Beys refuge. Then DAY 3: from 6.30am to 3pm for the return to the Lac des Bouillouses. I simply loved the diversity of the landscapes and the peace and quiet! The nature is lush. The path is very well marked overall and not very busy (except around the Lac des Bouillouses). I slept very well in my tent near the two refuges.
The only downsides:
- Be careful with your ankles. There are lots of stones and roots in places. Stay focused with every step, especially with a heavy load on your back.
- Very difficult descent (stage 10 of part 1 of the circuit). Quite steep, seems long and tiring, especially in direct sunlight, requires concentration.
- BE CAREFUL: Very difficult and technical climb (stage 2 of part 2 of the circuit). After already climbing for an hour, which is quite a cardio workout, this section requires skill and concentration. It's very steep, and I even had to climb a little (with weight on my back, I wasn't confident or used to it... I definitely wasn't expecting that). I can confirm that there are very few signposts in this area, but you can find your way by looking up, checking the horizon and using your common sense.
- Little or no mobile phone reception along the entire route. Especially for those with Free. I wanted to reassure a loved one, but I couldn't. Remember to tell your loved ones "no news is good news". Or give your name to the refuges, just in case.
In summary, I am very happy to have done this route, especially for a first experience. I couldn't have asked for anything better! Very varied and incredible landscapes, well-marked route, perfect weather, LOTS of regular water points, marmots and chamois, two excellent refuges. There are a few minor drawbacks to bear in mind, but they are quickly forgotten thanks to this wonderful route. Thank you again, it was unforgettable. Finally, I would recommend this route to people like me, but lighten your rucksack, take your time and take my comments into account. And everything will be fine.
Thanks again for sharing.
