Description of the walk

Park in the car park at Bagnols Town Hall.

(S/E) Head towards the church. Go to the left of the church, past the war memorial.

(1) Turn right onto Route des Carrières, passing the cemetery. At the bottom of the descent, take the road that curves sharply to the right. About twenty metres before the tarmac turns into a dirt track, take the grassy path down to the left alongside a hedge. At the bottom, turn left and continue to the low, overgrown wall, then go down to the right. Turn left and go round the walled private property. Finally, turn right to follow the Chemin de Saint-Abram.

(2) Cross Place de la Bascule and take Rue de l’Ancienne Mairie. At the “Le Bourg” signpost, turn left onto Rue Tourne-Cul, then head up to the right via Rue de l’Ancienne Poste. Take the D607 on the left towards Moiré, then turn right onto Chemin des Brudets. Continue straight on at the junction, then leave the unpaved track on your right. At the “Les Brudets” signpost, turn right towards La Madone and continue to a crossroads.

(3) Continue straight ahead on the tarmac road that climbs, then turn right onto the track that descends, marked by a sign reading “No motorised vehicles except residents”. When the main track bends to descend to the right, continue straight ahead on the narrower path, which climbs slightly. At the top, take the road furthest to the right. 150 m further on, follow the dirt track branching off to the left. At the junction, continue straight ahead, rejoining a tarmac road to follow until you reach a fork.

(4) Turn left, towards “Ruisseau de Nizy”. Stay firmly on the track and, at the junction with the tarmac road, continue straight on, towards “Fond Vieille”. Take the Chemin du Mont Vigny and, when you reach the house 50 m further down, turn right, directly towards the castle. Join the tarmac road and follow it to the top. Turn left. At the “La Gratte” signpost, head towards “Oingt stade J. Minot” and, at the “Place de Presberg” signpost, continue straight on.

(5) Follow the road towards Saint-Laurent-d'Oingt. Walk on the right-hand side of the road. At the “End of 30 km/h zone” sign, take the path leading down to the right. At the “Prony” signpost, turn right towards “La Garenne” and continue along the dirt track. At the "La Garenne" signpost, continue downhill towards "Le Polluis". Avoid the tarmac by taking the path on the right and continue towards the houses. At the "Polluis" signpost, turn left onto Chemin de Vervuis, heading towards Saint-Laurent-d'Oingt for about 200 m.

(6) Turn left towards Mont-Joli. Ignore the path leading downhill to the right. At the junction, continue straight ahead. When you reach the “Mont Joli” signpost, head straight on towards “Le Bourg”. At the fork, turn left onto Chemin de la Croix.

(7) Turn left onto Rue du Prieuré, then right onto Rue du 14 Juillet and, finally, left onto Chemin du Lavoir. At the stop sign, follow the path straight ahead and, 100 m further on, turn left onto a grassy, uphill path. At the “Le Bussy” signpost, turn left towards “Mont Joli”. At the Croix Ficaud junction, continue straight ahead, then turn right onto Chemin du Paradis. When the tarmac ends, continue straight ahead between the houses until you reach a fork.

(8) Take the path down to the right. Further on, leave the path on the right (which goes downhill) and continue straight ahead. When the path splits again, take the one on the left, which goes uphill. At the crossroads, turn left, uphill, onto the unpaved section. Stay on the left-hand track, then, after the steep section, ignore the grassy path leading down to the left and continue straight ahead. Turn right to join the D120.

(9) Cross it and take the path opposite. After 50 m, take the path that branches off to the far right, overlooking and running alongside the road. Join another road at the hamlet of Le Moulin à Vent.

(10) Turn right onto this road, passing the hamlets of Le Nevert du Haut and Verchères, each on either side of the road. At the “Le Layet d’en haut” marker, turn left downhill onto Chemin du Layet du Haut, then left onto Impasse de la Chintre. When you reach the high-voltage power lines, turn right at a 90° angle and follow the posts to the road.

(11) Follow it to the right. At the “Le Layet du Bas” marker, head towards “Les Tourrières”. Continue straight on along the road, which becomes a stony track and joins the Ruisseau de Nizy.

(12) Once at the bottom, follow the path leading off to the left and cross the stream. At the road, go straight on, uphill. After about 150 m, take the unpaved path on the left, then turn right about thirty metres further on. Cross the road and continue until you reach the houses of Le Charmetton at the top. Follow the Chemin du Charmeton to the D607 and turn right towards the church. Pass the “Les Verchères” signpost.

(13) At the “Le Bourg” signpost, head towards Bagnols. Continue straight on along the Chemin de Bussière. At the “Lanfert” signpost, head straight on towards the “no entry except for residents” sign.

(14) Turn right at the junction with the D38E. Continue along the Allée du Lapin Blanc until you reach the village of Bagnols.

(1) Follow Rue de l'Église to the town hall car park (S/E).

Departure at 9.20 am, return at 5 pm. Fairly cloudy, with a northerly wind.

Without a GPS, I followed the route using the description, which is accurate. It’s true that there’s quite a bit of tarmac, but that’s par for the course on these countryside walks. There are some very pretty villages along the route, particularly Oingt, which we visited (it’s well worth a detour). Before reaching Saint Laurent d’Oingt, we continued along Rue du Cimetière to the chapel. It’s a lovely spot for a picnic, with a wide-open view. Then we headed straight back down to the village, where it was easy to pick up the rest of the route.

Undoubtedly the most beautiful walk we’ve done in the Pierres Dorées. Stunning views all the way. The writer opted for the route through the vineyards.
At point 5 in Oingt, be careful not to take the small path just after the sign. You need to take the bend in the road to the left, go down a little, and find the path that descends to the right.
Between points 12 and 13, the climb up to Le Charmetton makes for a good cardio workout.
Thanks again for this route

A pleasant walk with some lovely villages, but too much tarmac.
No difficulty other than having to follow the GPX track too often, as the path does not follow standard signposting.

A very pleasant walk. A variety of paths and beautiful villages.
A few sections on roads with little traffic.
Landscapes are often unobstructed.
Hikes guided entirely by GPS.

Beautiful views along almost the entire route. Around 40% of the route is on quiet, tarmac-surfaced roads. Best done when it’s not too hot.
