Pasaia-San Sebastian - Amara along the coastal path

Leave your car in Hendaye and take this superb walk along the coastal path using the TOPO.
Get off at Herrera station and head for the harbour of Pasaia-San Pedro, the starting point of the coastal path.
Pass by Mont Ulia and its leisure park. In San-Sebastian, make a detour to Monte Urgull, with its fortress, monumental Christ (it's Rio) and view of Santa-Klara Island and the bay.

Return to Amara station and take the TOPO to Hendaye.

Description of the walk

From Hendaye, take the TOPO to Herrera station.
Turn left at the traffic lights. Cross the boulevard and follow the pedestrian walkway to the North. Take the footbridge, which branches off to the North-East.

(S/E) Follow the boulevard East to the Port of San Pedro.

(1) Continue along the Ria de Pasaia, following the yellow signs to the bottom of the steps leading up to the Ondartxo semaphore.

(2) Climb the steps of the Ondartxo stone staircase until you reach the road which ends at an esplanade at the foot of the Ondartxo semaphore. From this esplanade, the coastal path heads West, then South, signposted White-Red or Yellow, until it meets a concrete road.

Cross this road and continue westwards, marked Red-White, until you reach a crossroads of paths with an information panel. Descend to the right towards Donibane and reach a lookout point with a cave carved out by the wind.

(3) Retrace your steps to reach the trail junction. Follow the path up to the South, signposted Green. Follow the wide path South to the Mont Ulia leisure area.

(4) Head West again on a narrow path that passes the Tour des Baleiniers. Continue downhill to the West until you reach the path leading to Donibane, marked Red-White. Continue left to Donibane. Reach Zurriolako beach and walk along it to the bridge.

Cross the bridge and turn right along the Rio, towards San Telmo. Follow the sidewalk from the bridge. Turn left at the Museo de San Telmo sign and climb the concrete staircase to the fortress and Castillo de San Telmo. Take the stairs to the Castillo de la Mota, at the foot of the monumental statue of Christ of San Telmo.

(5) Join the access path to the fortress at the foot of the ramparts. Turn right again, South-West, to the Santa Klara esplanade facing Mont Igeldo.

(6) Retrace your steps and go down a narrow path to the right to join a wide path that winds up to the marina. Join the Kontxa esplanade and follow it due South to the Hôtel de Londres. Cross to the left and follow the long avenue past the hotel to the Amara train station (S/E).

From here, take the TOPO back to Hendaye.

No particular difficulties except for the crowds. Mostly shaded, so pleasant on a hot day, but a little disappointing as there aren't many sea views. Nice view of La Concha from Urgul Fortress and it's nice to stop at the pintxo tapas bars before continuing on your way.

A fairly steep route that can be slippery in places in the wet season, as is currently the case
but a very beautiful circuit at a height above sea level

I did this on a Saturday morning when the weather was fine, and there were lots of people from the top of the steps (tarmac path) to point 3. After that, there were far fewer people. Magnificent landscape. The path was slippery if it had been raining recently. Access to the stairs was open. Thank you

Be careful at point 1, which is no longer accessible according to the route of the walk. You have to climb up from the back of the Church of San Pedro (Pasaia) via a staircase, you'll pass a cemetery and you'll have to turn right to get back to the route, which is a large tarmac road.

This is a fairly easy walk, and the difference in altitude is quite manageable for beginners.

Magnificent hike, once you've negotiated the steps at the start no major difficulties, extraordinary views on both the land and sea sides.

The *.gpx circuit accompanying the file is absolutely LACKING! I'll try to send you :

  • Complementary.docx: additional information for users of the Spain discovery pack that I'm currently working on.
  • Sebastian.gpx which I propose as a replacement
  • Littoral.ppsx , slideshow of a failed hike

If you don't receive these files, please tell me how to get them (jprandos@free.fr - 09 52 43 95 93 - 06 87 33 03 62)
As I'm usually a very satisfied Visorando user, I'm going to send you some glowing comments on another file very soon...

This is a very nice walk that allows you to discover different urban and natural environments, as well as the TOPO.
It is possible to shorten the trail by following the GR instead of going up to point 4, and thus make it more accessible.
There is a path leading down to sea level just before km 6, visible on OpenStreetMap, which is steep but ideally placed for a picnic.
