San Marco and the summit of Txoritokieta near Errenteria.

The Fort of San Marco is a military construction located at the top of Mount Bizarain at an altitude of 260 metres. It was built in 1880, near the village of Errenteria, to defend San Sebastián and the region from French attacks by land and sea. It is an excellent vantage point offering beautiful views of San Sebastián, Pasaia and Txingudi Bay.

The hike described here also offers the chance to discover some dolmens and take trails that are somewhat hidden in the forest. It may be useful to bring pruning shears to cut back any brambles or ferns that may have invaded the path.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this hike is at San Marko Fort.
To get to this starting point by car, see the "practical information" section below.

(S/E) From where you are parked, continue in the same direction for a few moments, then turn left onto the downhill path, which is grassy at the start.

Further on, follow the signs for "Listtorreta".

(1) You will come across a series of dolmens. Take the time to visit the Berrozpin 1 dolmen.

(2) Then the Berrozpin 2 dolmen.

(3) Then the Berrozpin 3 dolmen.

(4) And finally, the superb Aitzetako dolmen.

(5) At the intersection with the trail, take the small path opposite that leads into the forest. It looks a little abandoned and in places nature has reclaimed its rights: branches on the ground, ferns and brambles that invade the path a little. But there is nothing really insurmountable and it is easy to follow this relatively visible path, and you are in the middle of the forest. Then come out onto another perpendicular path and take it uphill, i.e. to the right.

(6) You will arrive at a tarmac road a few metres from the large antenna. Walk back and forth to reach the summit. Then retrace your steps, but this time continue downhill and halfway down you will see a menhir in a field on the right.

(7) After passing the Uretxe house, you will be on a road that you must leave at this precise point to take a small path on the right. This small path is not very visible at first, but once you know it is there, it is relatively easy to find. Follow it gently through the forest: it is well marked and easy to follow.

(8) Turn left.

(9) Take the path on the right which climbs steeply up to the fort. Once you reach the foot of the fort, turn right and head for the car park. (S/E)

Notes

Driving to the starting point of the hike:

From Saint-Jean-de-Luz, drive to Béhobie to cross the border.

After crossing the bridge, take the first exit at the roundabout towards the GI-636 San Sebastian. Continue on the GI-636.

Take exit 1 Pasaia / Antxo / AP1 / AP8 / todas directiones and at the roundabout take the 2nd exit Pasaia / Antxo / todas directiones.

At the next roundabout, take the third exit towards Pasaia / todas direcciones.

At the next roundabout, take the 3rd exit for Errenteria / todas direcciones and immediately get into the left lane marked Beraun on the road.

Then, at the small roundabout, go straight on towards San Markos, pass over the motorway and take the 1st exit towards San Markos and continue along a fairly narrow road to the fort (the road is a local hiking trail, so there may be many pedestrians: drive carefully). Park in the car park.

For information, the journey by car from Saint-Jean-de-Luz is approximately 31 kilometres and takes around 45 minutes.

Worth a visit

In addition to hiking, visit the fort of San Marco.
