Description of the walk

To get to the start point in Zans, cross the bridge and head for the car park to the south-west of the hamlet.

(S/E) At the western end of the car park, go through the barrier and follow the track until you reach a path on the left.

(1) Take this path and head through the woodland to the next junction.

(2) Turn left and climb up to a bar. Continue along the access path to the bar until you reach a three-way junction. Turn left and, at the next three-way junction, keep right. Go through the gate and you’ll soon find a single track on the right.

(3) Follow this track until you reach a fork at a bridge.

(4) Turn right onto the bridge and you’ll reach a track suitable for vehicles. Turn left, pass the mountain hut and head for the next one.

(5) Continue along the path (normally signposted) which is on the left behind the bar. Climb up, then descend steeply to reach a junction (Adolf Munkel Trail).

(6) Carry on downhill to the left. At the next fork, head right, go round a hairpin bend to the left and you’ll reach a rock with a sign explaining everything (if you understand German, of course).

(7) Carry on straight along the path until you reach the stream (this section of the trail is now over). Take the track to the right, cross the bridge and, on your left, you’ll find a small, unobtrusive single track under the trees.

(8) Follow it down to the bottom of the valley until you reach a track. Turn left, cross the bridge and head straight on until you reach the car park (S/E).

Notes

(S/E) Plenty of car parks at Malga-Zannes (€8 per day in 2024).

Make sure you wear good walking boots; if the weather looks threatening, don’t hesitate to bring something to keep you warm (we did this hike at the end of June 2024; we had a downpour and then, after the rock face, walked back to the car park in the rain – it’s still proper mountain terrain with slippery roots and mud too...)
Take a camera – you’ll probably need it!
This hike is classified as moderate because, as mentioned earlier, the weather can make it slippery. There are a few steep slopes, but nothing that’s impossible to manage.

We were worried we wouldn’t be able to park at the Zannes car park as we arrived at 10 am… but just before the car park there was a sign with a green light and we were able to park without any trouble. A really lovely, easy walk, and the ‘rifugi’ are more like proper, very pleasant restaurants! (We took the little detour towards the Glatsch.)

The route is very busy, so it is essential to arrive before 9 a.m. during the summer to be able to park in the car park. There are far fewer people on the route itself, except at a few crossing points. The magnificent landscapes are to be admired at your leisure. I highly recommend this hike, which is of moderate difficulty.

A lovely walk with some magnificent views.
The car park is almost full by 9.00 am, so don’t leave it until the last minute in the morning.
If the weather permits, come in the afternoon – the car park is free after 2.00 pm.

There was a storm the day before, so I can confirm the climb was a bit slippery but not at all difficult.

Around point 5 (the two inns) it’s a bit like Disneyland, but then again, it’s only in that spot and the view is magnificent. Lots of people are heading up via the track.

Perfect description.
