Description of the walk

The starting point is at the former arms factory (Automobile Museum), the Vilmouth Towers with views over Châtellerault, the AFPA training centre, the military archives... Park in the car park behind the l’Atelier museum.

(S/E) Head towards the banks of the Vienne, passing the large skatepark in the factory’s colours. Turn left and continue along the quayside. Keep going straight ahead; on your right, you’ll see the Henri IV Bridge and then Île Cognet. Follow the quayside until you reach a tarmac footpath.

(1) Continue straight ahead; on your right you will see Île Sainte-Catherine and then the railway viaduct. Go under it and continue to the end of the path, where you will see the Châtellerault IUT on your left

(2) Turn left twice and continue straight on along Rue Alfred Nobel until you reach the railway line

(3) Turn left and take the footpath under the railway viaduct to cross the Vienne. Continue to Avenue Louis Ripault (D91), cross the road and head slightly left until you reach the first street on the right, Chemin de l’Alouette.

(4) Turn into this street, go under the railway line, then turn right and follow the railway line until you reach a footbridge.

(5) Take the footbridge, cross back over the railway line, continue to Avenue Louis Ripault and head to the roundabout on your left. Take the right-hand lane and head towards the Vienne.

(6) Continue along the quays to the Pont Henri IV.

(7) Cross this bridge and continue straight ahead at the roundabout. Take the Grand Rue de Châteauneuf on the left and continue straight on until you reach the Mission Locale.

(8) Turn left and take the footpath to the canal, then turn left. Walk past the Tours Vilmouth (you can go up there to enjoy the view), continue straight ahead and you’ll arrive at the car park (S/E).

The banks of the Vienne and the Manufacture site are worth a look. The rest of the walk is rather unremarkable...
However, the footpath is impassable during high water. There’s nothing of interest between points 2 and 3... it’s an industrial area. You might as well take the footpath over the railway viaduct straight away, halfway between points 1 and 2. A bit of a let-down.
