Plaiaundi Ecological Park in Irun from Ficoba

Plaiaundi Ecological Park is located in Irun, between the Bidassoa River, the Jaizubia Stream and Txingudi Bay. Inside the park, there is an interpretation centre providing information.

There are numerous observation points along the route where you can watch the birds without disturbing them. There are also many information panels and benches.

The park serves as a refuge for migratory birds due to its location at the foot of the Pyrenees. It has two saltwater lagoons and one freshwater lagoon.

With virtually no elevation gain, it is a great place for a family outing.

Description of the walk

The starting point for this hike is located in the free car park at Ficoba (exhibition centre) in Irun.
To get to this starting point by car, see the "practical information" section below.

For information, the rating established by the French Hiking Federation (FFR) is as follows: IBP = 16, length = 5.5 km and elevation gain = 4 m. (These figures may differ from those given by Visorando; in this case, always use the higher figures to get an idea of the difficulty of the hike).

(S/E) The road alongside the Ficoba is reserved for cars, and the Ficoba management therefore asks pedestrians not to use it. Proceed as follows: from where you are parked, facing the Ficoba buildings, head to the right to get closer to the other roads, then walk alongside the entire Ficoba building. At the roundabout, cross the road at the pedestrian crossing and follow the pavement to the right until you reach the next pedestrian crossing. Cross here and continue straight ahead, crossing the park. Go down the steps and turn left.

(1) Here you will find the access to the footbridge over the river, which offers a view of the Bidasoa. Pass under the Saint-Jacques bridge, a road bridge between Spain and France, then under the footbridge and the railway bridge.

(2) When you reach the end of the footbridge, take the tarmac path straight ahead, which is reserved for bicycles and pedestrians.

(3) At the car park, turn right and then immediately right again towards a barrier. Go through the barrier and continue straight ahead. You are now on footpaths. Start watching for birds on your right. Pass to the right of a large sports field.

(4) Turn right to follow a path that leads to the end of the bay.

(5) At the end, admire the bay, the village of Hondarribia opposite, and the various boat wrecks. Retrace your steps.

(4) Continue straight ahead to walk around the lakes. Take advantage of the many observation points to watch the birds and read the numerous information panels.

(6) Turn right and retrace your steps.

(3) Turn left and retrace your steps to return to the car park (S/E).
