Through the fields and woods of Pompignan

Park in the car park behind Pompignan church.

(S/E) Leave the car park and follow the Route de Fronton to the left, then turn left again at the washhouse. Walk up the gentle slope and, at the first bend, continue straight on along the Chemin de la Croix du Prince.

(1) After the last house, before the road takes a sharp bend, take the grassy path leading uphill to the right. Head straight into the woods and continue climbing steeply until you reach the Chemin de Garenne, then on to the Chemin des Crêtes.

(2) Follow the road to the left for 50 m, turn right onto the grassy track and continue zigzagging until you reach the tarmac junction.

(3) Go straight on past the junction and, after 20 m, turn onto the path on the right which, after 200 m, veers to the left, and continue towards the woods.

(4) Enter the field on the right and follow the path along the edge of the woodland until you reach another tarmac road.

(5) At the road, head left for 50 metres, then take the first path leading into the woodland on the right. It winds through the woodland; follow it for some time without ever crossing the stream, until you emerge into the field.

(6) Continue along the path to the right, then across the field to the left, following the edge of the woodland, until you reach the road.

(7) Walk 30 metres to the right and, before you reach the houses, take the small path that climbs to the left, straight into the woods. You’ll emerge back into the field; continue to the left along the edge of the woods, then enter the woods again, still following the same path. You’ll emerge back into the field once more and carry on straight ahead. Turn left, then right, and you’ll reach a tarmac road after the house.

(8) Turn left and, at the first bend, cross the ditch on the right and head straight on along the edge of the vineyard until, at the end, you enter the forest. In this woodland, there are numerous paths leading in all directions; it is impossible to provide a detailed route description, or any would be incomplete. You must use the app’s GPS positioning feature to navigate through it and emerge onto Chemin du Rieu Tort (there is sometimes a closed gate – please remember to close it behind you).

(9) Turn left and, at the three-way junction, continue along the left-hand-most road. At the junction, carry on straight ahead and head down the steep slope of the Côte Lefranc de Pompignan, then continue straight on towards the stadium.

(10) As soon as possible, before the bend, cross the ditch on the right to join the path running alongside the stadium.

(11) At the end of the stadium, go through the hedge and follow the path opposite, continuing for a long way through the woods until you reach a tarmac road.

(12) Follow the road to the left, walk alongside the castle wall, then take the street to the left and head for the car park behind Pompignan church (S/E).
