To get to the starting point, take the Bras-sur-Meuse road and at the first roundabout after Belleville, in front of the agricultural activity zone, take the D913b towards Douaumont. At the first major right-hand bend, take the small road opposite where there is a car park and a picnic area.
(S/E) From the car park, head north-east and follow a track for about 100 metres.
(1) Take thefirst path on the left. You will reach an MF1-type combat shelter. Retrace your steps.
(1) Follow the track again, turning left. At the entrance to a right-hand bend, you will see an MF2-type combat shelter in good condition opposite.
(2) Leave the track and go around the shelter on the left towards the Fontaine du Roi de Prusse (King of Prussia Fountain). Walk in a circular loop and you will come to a trench. Imagine that in 1916 there were no trees to obstruct the view of the Meuse valley. A gap in the vegetation allows us to imagine this. Continue and return to the MF2 combat shelter.
(2) Continue left on the track and reach the Ouvrage de Froideterre.
(3) Take the opportunity to visit the fortification. Behind the fortification, take the path on the left. At the end, continue to the right and then right again at the next intersection. You will reach Entrenchment X.
(4) Walk along it, cross a path and reach Retranchement Y after a few metres. Then return to the path and head left (east).
(5) Leave PC 119 on your right and take the path between the forest tracks to reach shelter PC118.
(6) Turn left, go around the shelter on the left and continue to the remains of the Thiaumont fortification. Continue on the path that turns right.
(7) At the crossroads, follow the road to the left. At the road, continue to the left and head for the Douaumont Ossuary.
(8) Go down the stairs at the back and in line with the monument. Continue along the path towards the Tranchée des Baïonnettes. Cross the road carefully and go to the memorial.
(9) From the Tranchée des Zigzags, retrace your steps to the Douaumont Ossuary. Go around the monument on the right and rejoin the road you took on the way there. In the left-hand bend, leave the road and turn right at the crossroads you passed on the way there.
(7) Then turn left and walk behind the Israelite Monument.
(6) At the intersection of two forest paths, rejoin the route you took on the way there and continue until you reach the wide bend to the right.
(5) At the end of the curve, leave the track and turn left. After a few metres, you will reach the PC 119 shelter. Continue straight ahead (south-west) until you reach an intersection.
(10) Continue straight ahead to quickly reach PC 120. Turn back.
(10) Turn right downhill and you will come to a road.
(11) Cross the road carefully and enter the Abri des Quatre Cheminées site. Walk around the site and return to the road (note: there are many protected orchids here).
(11) Follow the road to the left. Note the ammunition depot on the right. Continue along the road and, at the fork, turn right. You will reach the Ouvrage de Froideterre.
(3) Follow the track to the south-west and take the same route back to the car park (S/E).
