Park in the memorial car park. This fascinating museum is well worth a visit, but allow at least two hours.
(S/E) Take the white path at the bottom of the car park exit and stroll through the destroyed village of Fleury.
From the cemetery, go up to the right between the two hedges and join the D913.
(1) Cross the road carefully to find a small path in the undergrowth (Chemin du Tacot). Take it to the left and continue to a fork.
(2) Turn left, almost a hairpin bend, and you will come out at the bottom of the Douaumont National Necropolis.
(3) Walk to the back of the ossuary. Remember the famous Kolh/Mitterrand photo taken here in 1984. Cross the necropolis to reach the car parks.
(4) Behind the toilets, take the path marked "Tranchée des Baïonnettes" (Bayonet Trench), which crosses the D913, and reach this trench. Visit it via the tourist access path.
(5) The path starts again at the opposite corner of the arrival point. Just a little further on, take a winding path on the right through the rugged forest to reach the D913d.
(6) Cross the road carefully and follow a path that leads to the Boyau de Londres to reach Fort de Douaumont.
(7) Set off again along the white path, parallel to the car park, called Chemin de la Plume. When you arrive at Fort Douaumont, visit it at your leisure. The walk on the "roof" is worth a look and is freely accessible. There is an admission charge for the interior tour, but it is well worth it.
(7) Continue left until the next fork.
(8) Turn right onto a grassy track, then turn right again a little further on. Do not follow the sign for "Abris à 900 m" (shelters 900 m away). You will come to a white path (Chemin du Tacot).
(9) Turn left for 300 m (if you turn right, you will return to the starting point).
(10) Turn right (Chemin des Chars) to return to the memorial (S/E).
