Orri de Planès - Étang de Planès

This circular hike is short but involves a significant elevation gain relative to the distance covered. It does not follow any roads and climbs gradually through the Planès Communal Forest, then out into the open along the edge of the Cambre d’Aze to the small Étang de Planès and its small shelter for hikers

Description of the walk

Start from the village of Planès, from the car park on the upstream side of the D32, opposite the town hall.

Signposting:PR®7Catalan Pyrenees “Planès Valley”

(S/E) With your back to the road, follow the path that branches off to the right at the corner of the car park (shared path with thePR® 9 Catalan Pyrenees “Tour de Villages”). Cross the road, continue straight ahead and reach a fork.

(1) Turn right, walk through the forest (steep climb) and reach a track.

(2) Cross this track to continue on the path opposite and reach another track. Walk a few dozen metres to the left until you reach a turning area.

(3) Take the path on the right and continue the climb until you reach a junction with a track on the right.

(4) Continue along the path to the left until the next junction with a signpost (elevation 1980m).

(5) Head right, towards “Étang de Planès 1.5 km”: yellow markings are still visible on this path. Follow the Planès valley, along the Ribera de Planès, and reach the lake.

(6) Turn right and climb up to the Estany de Planès shepherd’s hut.

(7) Then head back down the same path to the junction that pointed towards Étang de Planès. Just before this, take the opportunity to make a short detour of a few metres to the right to climb up to the ridge and enjoy the view.

(8) Return to the path and head back to the fork you passed on the way up (elevation 1980m).

(5) Leave the route you have already taken and continue to the right (PR®7). Reach a junction with a forest track and follow it to the left, almost directly opposite, for about fifty metres.

(9) Follow the path to the right until you reach a track and continue for about 100 metres to the right.

(10) Take a path on the left and head down into the forest.

(11) Cross two tracks and head straight on to the church at Planès.

(12) Turn left, going round the house opposite, and follow the straight grassy path to the Town Hall (S/E).

Notes

No significant water sources.

The route requires you to pass through several gates designed to keep livestock in, so please remember to close them behind you.

The recently built hut at the Planès Pond is intended for herdsmen and herdswomen. It also includes a shelter for hikers with a few beds.

The Planès Valley is symmetrical to the Eyne Valley in relation to the Cambre d'Aze but is less frequented.

A superb walk thanks to the enchanting surroundings. It doesn’t feel like a strenuous effort, despite the elevation gain, as the climb is very gradual.

A beautiful walk in the stunning Planes Valley, which is less frequented and wilder than its neighbour, the Eyne Valley. For your information, the Planes pond is running low on water...

A steep climb on a well-maintained path through pine trees leads to a gently sloping meadow.
The view at the top is worth all the effort.
Magnificent
Watch out for cows!

Most of the climb is through pine forest along the Planès riverbank. The reward at the top is a breathtaking view. No particular difficulty, but I needed the app as the description is minimal. At an altitude of 2,151 metres (according to the app), leave the path 30 metres to the left to see a pretty little waterfall in a crevice in the rocks. Interesting chat with a Cerdan cattle farmer at the shepherd's hut.
