Park in the car park along the D224.
(S/E) Head towards the centre of Lussas and its church. Head towards Aubenas on your left, passing the school and the cinema.
(1) At the corner by the fire station, turn right onto Chemin des Condamines. This leads to a crossroads (with a metal shed); turn left here.
(2) At the ‘Les Combasses’ signpost, carry on straight ahead (south-west) through the vineyards. At the junction with a road, turn right towards the first houses of the hamlet of Eyriac. At a crossroads, turn left into the small street and follow it just past a chicken coop and a lovely vegetable garden.
(3) At the “Eyriac” signpost, head up the small path on the right towards L’Échelette. At the end, turn right into a narrow lane which soon curves to the left. Take the path that branches off diagonally to your right, which climbs gently and then descends.
(4) Pass under a high-voltage power line (unmarked pylon) and continue west-south-west. Ignore a turn-off to the left straight away and, at the next junction, head diagonally left (follow the signposting carefully). At the “Les Gardettes” signpost, turn left towards Lussas to reach the “l’Échelette” signpost (no label, vandalised map).
(5) Cross the D259 (take care), head for the car park and cross it diagonally to the post with a white-and-yellow marker. Head downhill and follow the path which crosses a first track and continues to a second.
(6) Then turn left (you’ll find the signposting a little further on). On your right, you can see the fortifications of the oppidum. The track winds round a valley and then turns right (west).
(7) At the junction, turn right (north-north-west). After a bend to the left, you’ll reach the oppidum, where you can enjoy a remarkable view from the edge of the cliff (please take care).
(8) After visiting the oppidum, return along the same route to the post beneath the high-voltage power line.
(4) Take the path on the left (north-east) and do not take the one you came along on the way out. Note the lovely views over Aubenas and its plain. The path descends and joins the track overlooking the Louyre Canyon.
(9) Continue north-north-east and follow the track uphill (a slight incline). There are magnificent views, including the cliffs to the north, where you can sometimes spot rock climbers, with the Saint-Laurent promontory in the background. The track leaves the cliff edge and leads to a small car park frequented by rock climbers...
(10) At a place called Issart de Madame, carry on straight ahead (south-east) along a pleasant tree-lined path that descends gently to the first houses of the hamlet of Les Combasses. Then follow the small road that bends to the right and leads to a crossroads.
(11) Turn left to return to the crossroads you passed on the way out.
(2) Return to Lussas via the Chemin des Condamines, which you took at the start of the walk, and you’ll find the car park where you started, to the right of the church (S/E).
