New Bastille trail via Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux

A path leading to the Bastille de Grenoble was built in 2025. From the houses of Saint-Martin-Le-Vinoux, you can quickly reach the woods, where the route winds between oak trees and small scree slopes. The work has made the path easier and more user-friendly, but the climb remains challenging. At the Fort, admire the panoramic view of the Belledonne, Vercors and Chartreuse mountain ranges. Descend towards Porte de France and Parc Guy Pape.

Description of the walk

Park along the Ancienne Route de Lyon. In Grenoble, parking spaces are paid during the week. There are a few free spaces in Saint-Martin-Le-Vinoux. Tram access: line E, Casamaures Village stop (park and ride).

(S/E) Take the staircase parallel to the road, just before the Saint-Martin-le-Vinoux sign (see photo). When you reach Impasse de la Libération, continue climbing on the right. Take Impasse du Belvédère and turn right onto Rue de la Libération. Continue right until you reach Route de Clémencières.

(1) Cross it carefully, then take the small green metal staircase. In the woods, take the path on the right and follow the route lined with logs. Walk along a guardrail (see photo), then cross a small scree slope. Some passages are quite steep. Be careful, as the ground can be slippery or muddy in wet weather. Walking poles are very useful here. You will reach the intersection with the entrance to the Mandrin caves on your left.

(2) Here you can choose whether or not to go through them.
If you do, you can easily rejoin the route by taking the Bastille path (tarmac road on the right as you leave the caves).
If not, continue along the trail to the right.
After visiting the Bastille site, head towards the lower level (the one you arrived at) near the low wall facing Grenoble, with the cable car on your right. From there, you will see the path leading back down below. On the left, take the first hairpin bend, which goes around the fort wall. Do not take the second bend and continue straight on towards Porte de France. Descend, keeping to this course. You will reach a Y-junction with a log reinforcement in the middle of the path for the last few metres.

(3) Take the path on the right, marked by a red sign indicating the second part of the via ferrata. Walk 8 metres, then take a path downhill to the left into the woods. Continue for 60 metres, take the hairpin bend, then the next path on the right which leads to an old stone building. Take the path on the left downhill to Guy Pape Park.

(4) After crossing the park, take the path immediately to the right, retracing your steps a little (see map). Be careful not to take the gate 30 metres further on (normally closed), which leads to a steep descent to Via Ferrata.
Go down a small, fairly steep staircase (take care if it is wet) before joining Chemin de la Rochette.

(5) Here you have two options:
- descend Chemin de la Rochette (on the left) to the main road, then follow it to the car park (S/E),
- take the path on the right to return to the initial crossroads through the forest, which is the route shown on the map.

(1) Retrace your steps in the opposite direction to return to the car park (S/E).

Walking poles are strongly recommended after a rainy day or during the wet season (even in good weather).

Variation 1: start at Jardin des Dauphins, go to point (4), then follow the route.

Variation 2: start at Chemin de la Rochette, reach point (5), then follow the route.

Worth a visit

Large park (fort glacis) at the exit of the Mandrin caves or accessible via Chemin de la Bastille from the fort.

A little-known route with no one on the ascent but very busy at the start of the descent, known to all Grenoble residents, especially on this school holiday with beautiful weather.
An interesting route.

Route taken the day after Christmas, no hikers on the way up, but lots of people on the way back down the stairs, including many families, good atmosphere... On the way back, I made a mistake between 5 and 1, there was a fallen tree, I made a note of it, retraced my steps and had no problem finishing the route on the right route.

This hike takes you up to the Bastille via lesser-known paths, which is what makes it interesting to me.

Hello, I did this route yesterday but only discovered your itinerary today. I'd like to add a comment about the places we passed through, and other hikers may want to add their own information. I found the redeveloped climb pleasant, apart from a few short steep and muddy sections that remained in the shade. So you need good shoes and walking sticks to avoid slipping. On the way back from the Bastille, you pass more or less next to or below an old building, which, according to historians, is a former "country house" belonging to the jurisconsult Guy Pape, who used to travel there on a mule. It's a shame that it remains in ruins, as it could be cleared and made safe to create a lovely viewpoint. Further down, you pass close to the "old quarries", where you could climb boulders in the 1980s before the Saint-Egrève quarry in Rochepleine was converted into a climbing school. Who remembers that? Climbing had to stop when the unsecured site was more or less banned or discouraged. There is also a cave near the trail, which has been converted into a rest area and is very clean at the moment. Does anyone know who converted it? It's a little secret spot not far from the city. Thank you for your answers.
