(S) Start in Lindenfels, at the intersection of Nibelungenstraße and Freiherr-vom-Stein-Straße, opposite the pedestrian zone. If you are coming by bus, get off at the Lindenfels Mitte stop (roughly level with the Lindenfels bistro) and walk along Nibelungenstraße in a north-westerly direction. First, walk along Freiherr-von-Stein-Straße through the residential area, which climbs quite steeply in an easterly direction. At the first intersection, continue straight ahead and follow Schenkenbergstraße. Here you have a beautiful view of Lindenfels Castle on the other side of the valley.
Opposite house no. 7 (the second-last house on the street), the path turns left into the forest, goes up a few steps, then follows a narrow footpath through the forest
(1). The hiking trail deviates from the main path and leads up a few steps to the castle on the Köpfchen. Then follow the sign down a few steps, turn right at the next fork and then take a small path at the edge of the residential area, past the Waldschlösschen, until you reach Nibelungenstraße again. Cross this road and continue along Kamsbachweg for a short distance.
(2) Leave Kambsbachweg and continue straight ahead shortly after the sawmill, where the path soon leads into the forest. The path descends on unpaved trails, which can become slippery when wet.
(3) Immediately after the paddock, the path becomes muddy even in dry weather.
Follow the Nibelungensteig sign (red N on a white background) through the forest or along the edge of the forest. Depending on the season, the path can be quite overgrown.
(4) Leave the forest and you will come to an unpaved forest path. A few metres before the B47 (which is within sight), turn sharp right and then shortly afterwards left onto a narrow path into an unspoilt wood.
Shortly afterwards, the path leads out of the forest again, crosses a meadow and offers a magnificent view of the castle on the Reichenberg near Reichelsheim.
(5) At the Gumpener Kreuz (a confusing crossroads with a former restaurant), cross the B38 and follow the gravel path uphill. The path is quite steep at first.
(6) The hiking trail follows the old border path between the former Chur Pfalz and the former county of Eberbach. From here, the trail climbs moderately but steadily. Follow the signposts and you will discover some boundary stones along the way. The trail continues slightly uphill through the forest, then downhill for a short distance and then more or less level through the forest.
(7) We come to a crossroads where we turn right. The path continues along the edge of the forest, across meadows and through the forest, always slightly downhill.
(8) As soon as you leave the forest, you will see the Walburgiskapelle chapel, your next destination, on the left below the third wind turbine from the right. Follow the signposts to the village of Weschnitz. Here, follow the Ostertalstraße for a short distance and then turn right into Schollacker. After crossing the Osterbach, continue straight ahead and then turn right at the edge of the village, first along the edge of the forest and then uphill into the forest. Not far from the hiking car park, you will cross the Odenwaldstraße.
(9) At the cemetery (a short detour is worthwhile), turn left into the forest and follow a narrow path that winds steeply uphill. If you prefer a more relaxed route, you can take the large loops of the road.
(10) We reach the Walburgiskapelle chapel. The chapel is a wonderful place for a lunch break, there are plenty of benches in front of and behind the church and, with a bit of luck, you may even see deer here. Behind the church is the altar stone and space for open-air services, and about 50 metres behind that is a flush toilet. Immediately after the chapel, you will find a shelter on the left-hand side, which provides a dry place to rest on rainy days. At the next fork, keep left and turn slightly right at the next crossroads.
(11) We come to a spot with wind turbines. Be careful here: after the large wood store or after passing the wind turbine, turn right. The path marking is easy to miss. Then continue towards Grasellenbach, always slightly downhill. We continue straight ahead until we reach the outskirts of Hammelbach. Here we turn left.
(12) We then turn right and the path leads past Café Bauer on the right (km 12, 1 hour from Walburgiskapelle), where you can stop for coffee and cake. Behind the café, continue to the left. At the next opportunity, keep left and then turn left at the next T-junction.
(13) At the next opportunity, turn right. Walk along the stream on the Kunstweg (art trail), which features several stone sculptures.
(14) The path leads past a Kneipp facility to Grassellenbach, where we turn left into Hammelbacher Straße.
(E) The end of the stage is the village of Grasellenbach. There are several places to stay here, including the Wellnesshotel Siegfriedbrunnen. If you are travelling by public transport, turn right at the village lime tree and left after the bridge into Guntherstraße. The bus stop is opposite the Nibelungenhalle.
