Nibelungensteig (2): Reichenbach - Lindenfels

The Nibelungensteig is a certified Qualitätsweg "Wanderbares Deutschland" (Quality Trail "Hikeable Germany") that runs for 130 km in several stages, some of which are very strenuous, with a total of more than 4,000 metres of elevation gain from west to east across the Odenwald and thus through three federal states (Hesse, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg). Our division differs from the official stages. We have chosen some shorter tours, added a few extra metres and stayed overnight in different places in some cases. When planning your tour, please note that accommodation, refreshment and catering facilities are not always available.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: In 10 stages on the Nibelungensteig

Description of the walk

(Start) The hike starts at the Felsenmeer car park in Reichenbach. From here, we turn left and walk approx. 2 km through the street village of Reichenbach. Behind the car park, we turn left into Seifenwiesenweg and shortly afterwards reach Beedenkirchener Straße. We follow this road until we reach Nibelungenstraße.

(1) Here, we turn left before the church and continue along the road.

(2) At the Felsenmeerschule, we turn right and follow Knodener Straße and then Hohensteiner Straße. We leave these roads and continue straight ahead onto a forest path.

(3) We walk leisurely uphill on this road, past a refuge hut.

(4) We come to a barn on the hilltop, where we keep to the right and continue slightly downhill to Hohenstein Castle, the estate and event location (walking time to this point approx. 60 minutes)

(5). The Nibelungensteig trail takes us past the estate, then uphill through the forest. We ignore the next two turnoffs to the right and follow the path, which curves to the right and then shortly afterwards to the left. At the next opportunity, we turn right and stay on the left-hand path.

(6) After approx. 2.5 hours of hiking and a strenuous climb, we reach the Knodener Kopf (511 m).

(7) Shortly after the highest point at an unclear signpost, we first turn right, then left.

(8) The trail descends slightly to the village of Knoden, where we return to the paved road.
At the fire station, we turn right downhill, past a former animal enclosure, and shortly afterwards left again onto a narrow unpaved path, which we follow uphill to the village of Schannenbach

(9). At the entrance to the village, there is also a nice barbecue area with plenty of seating on the left-hand side of the large playground, where you can take a lunch break in dry weather.

(10) This brings us to Krehbergstraße, which we leave to the right onto Am Hochmoor and pass the Sonnentau house. The Schannenbach Moor is on our right. Immediately after the Sonnentau house, we turn left and take the meadow path uphill. On some days, the path is blocked by a chain and marked as a private road. However, the official hiking trail continues up here. We then take Krebergstraße to the left through the village and after approx. 150 m turn right into the forest path. Here we walk on a flat, beautiful path, which can be muddy in wet weather.

(11) We turn right at the second turn and arrive at the Mathildenruhe refuge, where there is another (covered) rest area with a wonderful view of the valley. Finally, we reach the Krehberg at an altitude of 575 m. Then we turn right and the next approx. 2.5 km is a fairly steep descent, which can become very slippery when wet. We cross Starkenburgstraße and continue to follow the hiking trail.

(12) Shortly before Schlierbach, we come across a beautiful rest and barbecue area with an unkempt Kneipp facility and a shelter. Our path then leads to the left and along the edge of the village, first through Hohensteinstraße, then right through Kirchstraße.

(13) Pass the Schannenbach cemetery – it's worth taking a moment to visit the cemetery.
We cross Fürtenstraße and arrive at the Jägergarten. Turn left and follow the road In der Bain out of the village. We can see Lindenfels Castle, today's destination, on the opposite hill.

(14) Below the campsite, the path makes a large bend that feels like it is going in the wrong direction. Keep to the right behind the sports field and pass the youth campsite and the fish pond, then climb the stairs to Lindenfels.

(15) We reach Schlierbacher Weg, which we follow a few metres to the right, then immediately turn slightly left.

(16) After a few metres on the main path, we follow the path up to the left. This takes us below the castle.

(E) There is another steep climb, we pass through the Schloßwaldweg, go through the city gate and then reach the dragon museum below the castle in the street In der Stadt. This is where our stage ends.
If you want to take the bus, turn right into the pedestrian zone at the tourist information office and then right onto Nibelungenstraße to the bus stop.

Trail markings: The trail is marked throughout with a red N, and the access route with a green N.
