Description of the walk

For train connections between departure and arrival points, see the Practical Information section.

(S) Depart from Manarola church. Go up the road that runs alongside the river and cross the car park.

(1) After the car park, turn right onto path 506 towards Groppo. This path is tarmac at the start, and the red and white markings are clearly visible.

(2) Cross the small road at the pedestrian crossing; the path continues just opposite.

(3) Cross the provincial road and take path 506 towards Groppo. After about 50 metres, you will come to a fork. Take path 502 on the right towards Strada Del Santuari. This path begins to climb a little more between the bushes (with steps, of course) and crosses vineyards with views of the sea as it climbs.

(4) At this junction, continue straight on road 502 towards San Bendetto. On the hill behind and above, you can see the village of Volastra. Keep left at the junction a few dozen metres further on.

(5) At the top of the climb, find a cattle track that leads to a fairly wide path (path 530) to take on the right towards Bivio Con. This carriage road is relatively flat and offers beautiful views of the coast (Corniglia and Monterrosso are visible). If it is the right season, you can taste some arbutus berries (choose ones that are red and slightly soft) and collect some chestnuts.

(6) A cattle track leads to path 501 on the right towards Riomaggiore and marks the start of the descent. You are now at Costa di Campione at an altitude of 395 m, as indicated on the signpost. During the descent, you can see the sanctuary of Nostra Signora di Montenero on the left. Reach a road.

(7) Cross it to find the path opposite, slightly to the left. Continue down the steep slope until you reach Riomaggiore Castle and its small car park (E).
