Monte Alcudina (or Incudine) from Coscione

A very pretty walk that follows the Coscione plateau and, once at the top, offers a superb view of the Bavella Needles.
The route follows part of theGR®20.
There are no particular difficulties with navigation; everything is well signposted from start to finish.

Description of the walk

The walk starts at the little San Petru chapel. You can also start at the Matalza Refuge, which will shorten the route by a few hundred metres.

(S/E) Go round the back of the chapel, following the red and white markings ofthe GR®20. You’ll soon reach the Matalza Refuge, where there’s a water source.

(1) Continue south-east. This part of the route is almost flat.

(2) At the signpost, head straight on (south) along the path that runs alongside the stream and crosses a beautiful green plateau. Keep following theGR®20, heading up the Croce stream to reach the I Croce refuge (food available).

(3) Take the stony path that passes in front of the sheepfold. Climb, alternating between a southerly and easterly direction. You will reach the Bocca di Chiralba (signpost).

(4) Follow the path that climbs to the left. From there, the climb becomes steeper until you reach a ridge (still on theGR®20). Reach the ridge at Bocca Stazzunara (magnificent view of the Bavella Needles).

(5) Turn left (north) to climb to the summit of Monte Alcudine (leaving theGR®20). Continue along the ridge and follow the yellow markings on a fairly steep climb to the summit.

(6) Descend on the other side, following the northern ridge (yellow markings).

(7) Directly below the Col de Luana, turn left (west). Descend and pass through small plateaus, then through a forest (water source). Continue descending.

(8) A footbridge allows you to cross a river. This is where the forest ends. Head to the right (north-west) along the dirt track, which climbs slightly before turning into a stone-paved path as it descends (south-west).

(9) Leave Cavallara on your left and continue west-south-west. Finally, the stones give way to earth, which is much more pleasant, leading back to a junction you passed on the way out.

(2) Turn right and, following the same path as on the way there, return to the Chapel of San Petru (S/E).

A magnificent hike with a unique view from the summit. The road to the car park is long and winding but in good condition and fully tarmac-surfaced; you just need to take your time.
There is a spring and space to camp at the starting point.
The outward leg on the GR20 is easy to follow and not technical. The last 15 minutes of the climb are a bit tougher, and the descent over the scree is a bit tricky but nothing too technical. In terms of navigation, it gets a bit trickier from the fountain after the pass, in the beech forest; the path is somewhat hidden, so you need to look out for the cairns. The final stretch on the track, after the footbridge, is easy.
We highly recommend it!

A magical day … but very difficult access
A magical day… but very difficult to get to

We spent an idyllic day in this veritable Garden of Eden!
But be warned, the road up is in very poor condition: tarmac, but in places there are huge potholes and even sections of tarmac that have come away. Fortunately, my husband is a very good driver and resourceful; I wouldn’t have been able to drive (we have a Renault Master 3 van; we managed it by driving slowly and taking great care to position the wheels correctly so as not to hit anything)
We stopped 1 km from the car park as the road became far too rough for our vehicle; we finished the journey on foot – quicker and safer.
We arrived at around 9.30 am after 45 minutes on the rough road.
We started with Monte Incudine, hiking in the opposite direction as it was tricky to find our bearings on the plateau. The on-site signposts differed from those on the app, but we eventually found our way,

At the start, just the plateau with the Pozzines and all the wild animals (pigs, cows, horses) that aren’t afraid of you. It’s fairly flat, but save your energy for later as the final few kilometres are a proper climb! The path isn’t very well signposted on the section before the GR20 – be warned, we had to turn back twice – then we reached the GR, which is very well signposted. We had a snack at the top with a 360-degree view: magnificent, then the descent (took about 3 hours to reach the top).

We then walked all the way round the Plateau, first following the Sentier du Berger, which is magnificent and offers a variety of different landscapes. We stopped at the farm to buy a piece of cheese and refill our water bottles at the fountain (at the bottom of the park with the animals), then continued through the peat bogs and between the rocks to the refuge where the walks start.
It was on this stretch that we saw the most animals (lots of pigs, a family of cows, horses and a herd of goats)

Be careful on the Shepherds’ Trail: you must follow the cairns closely or you’ll get lost….

We arrived at 5.00–5.15 pm and decided to explore the other part of the plateau, where there are the most Pozzines, via the Water Trail (listed as 2 hours 15 minutes on the map, but we did it in about 1 hour 30 minutes, walking quickly and without stopping).
We saw more horses, cows and a few pigs at the far end of the plateau, as well as some lovely little streams and flowers… this part is very easy and doesn’t involve any climbing!
One last little effort on the way back for the driver. Pigs everywhere along the path and memories to last a lifetime!
The Plateau is definitely worth a visit; it’s an exceptional place, but you’ll need a car or van that isn’t too low to the ground, and you’ll need to drive carefully

A magnificent hike, starting on the plateau and the pozzines where pigs, cows and horses graze, followed by an ascent to the GR20 pass where the landscape gradually opens up to reveal a magnificent view at the pass. The climb up the Incudine is a little more challenging but short, offering a 360° panorama that gave us views of Ajaccio, Les Sanguinaires and Capo Rosso on one side, and Porto Vecchio, Sperone and Cala Rosa beyond the Aiguilles de Bavella. The descent along the ridge is truly splendid; the section through the forest offers a chance to cool off a little... The return journey along the forest tracks is a bit long.
