Mont Vorassay via the Bionnassay glacier and the Col de Tricot

This route does not present any particular difficulties, except for a significant elevation gain (over 1,100 metres), which classifies it as difficult.
It reaches the summit of Mont Vorassay after the Col de Tricot and passes close to the Bionnassay glacier. There are magnificent views of the refuge and the Aiguille du Goûter as well as the Aiguille de Bionnassay. The descent is very pleasant and passes through a beautiful forest.

Description of the walk

Park in the Crozat car park above the hamlet of Bionnassay.

(S/E) At the car park exit, turn left and walk for about 100 metres. At the three-way junction, go straight ahead and then take a road on the left lined with a few houses. Continue along a path on the right which descends to a wider track. Take this track on the left to the Pont des Places bridge which crosses the Torrent de Bionnassay. This section is easy.

(1) Continue straight ahead. At the intersection after the bridge, turn left. Shortly afterwards, the path narrows and becomes steep. After a fairly steep climb through the forest, you will reach the terminal tongue of the Bionnassay glacier.

(2) Leave the path that branches off to the left towards the footbridge, which is closed at this time of year (the wooden planks are removed after the summer), and continue climbing in a south-westerly direction.

(3) Pass by the Tricot chalets and Combe des Juments and climb towards Col de Tricot. The climb is gradual with magnificent views of the Bionnassay glacier, Aiguille du Goûter and the Goûter refuge.

(4) When you reach Col de Tricot, you will see the Miage chalets. From the pass, take the path on the right that leads to Mont Vorassay after a 200m steep climb on grassy terrain.

(5) Mont de Vorassay. Descend via the same route to the intersection with the path leading to the glacier footbridge.

(2) Turn right and walk for about 50 metres. As this footbridge is closed after the summer, turn right onto a path that runs alongside the stream in the moraine and climb up to the lake at the foot of the Bionnassay glacier.

(6) Cross the stream. Head north, walking over moraines for 5 minutes to reach the path coming from the footbridge.

(7) Turn right. After a steep climb towards the south-east, pass through some undergrowth and then a meadow to reach a crossroads.

(8) Turn left heading north-west, leaving the path on the right that leads to Nid d'Aigle. Shortly afterwards, at the three-way junction, take the left path, Chemin de l'Are, and continue downhill along a very pleasant path through the forest.

(9) Cross Le Planet, then La Chapiot and head straight to the Crozat car park (S/E).

Beautiful circular hike with views of the glacier. The walkway is definitely worth the effort. We extended our hike a little at the pass on the left towards the Plan Glacier refuge instead of climbing up to Mont Vorassay on the right. However, to get to the glacial lake, there is no path up the stream before the footbridge. You have to follow the cairns in the scree after the footbridge. Very pleasant descent.
Lots of people on the T M B at Tricot, fewer elsewhere.
Thank you for this great hiking idea.

Hello
On 03/08/23, I went via the Are plan and the footbridge, which can be quite impressive with lots of water and its tangue. I took the alternative route towards the chalets, which is a must as there are some lovely viewpoints and then the very good path is like a balcony and allows you to see the glaciers. For Mont Vorassay, I tried the ridge to the end, but gave up because the path is blocked by rhododendrons. Someone confirmed to me that it is safe to pass, but it is a bit congested. It is essential to climb the mountain or at least gain some height. This allows you to enjoy a superb view and avoid the crowds at the pass.
For the descent, I took the Pont des Places... There are conflicting signs after the second waterfall; the arrow on the post is not obvious and a red and white cross contradicts the arrow. Fortunately, a couple and I saw some young people climbing up.

A breathtaking view. Quite a popular hike, we pushed on to the ridges, which were challenging and very windy, but the view was splendid!

Superb hike. Varied route. Splendid view from the summit.
Please note that when the footbridge is closed, it is not easy to cross to the other side of the river.
