Miller's Dale & Cressbrook Dale from Tideswell Dale

This circular Peak District walk starts in Tideswell Dale and continues through Miller's Dale into Ravensdale. The route is an ideal introduction to this area which is popular for walkers.

Millers Dale to Cressbrook

Description

(D)The start is the car park in Tideswell Dale alongside the B6049 (grid ref. SK154742). There are public toilets here too. Exit the car park to the south and walk down Tideswell Dale following the route of the stream. This path leads down to a tarmac lane (grid ref. SK156731). You are now in Miller's Dale.

(1)Bear left along this lane with the River Wye to your right. You soon arrive at Litton Mill, once infamous for its harsh treatment of child labour. Continue through the Mill following the signed concessionary path. This leads you down to the banks of the river. Continue through this delightful steep-sided Dale to reach Cressbrook. Do not cross the river here instead walk left up to the tarmac road.

(2)Turn left and where the road forks, keep right continuing up the lane into Cressbrook Dale. At grid ref. SK171733 bear right down a track to Ravensdale Cottages. Continue past the cottages joining a path up the Dale through woodland to reach a footbridge (grid ref. SK171741).

(3)Cross the bridge and start a steady climb up the side of the Dale. Once at the top of the slope and having enjoyed the view, bear left and descend into Cressbrook Dale again. (You can omit this climb by staying on the valley floor using a concessionary path.) Reaching the valley floor continue for a short distance up the dale to reach a signed footpath on your left to Litton (grid ref.SK173748). Follow this path up Tansley Dale to reach a walled lane.

(4)Cross the lane and follow the continuing path across the field to reach the main road through Litton. There is a pub in Litton. Bear left along the main road through the village. Initially keep to the left where the road splits and ignoring the left turn into Bottomhill Road, continue to the B6049. Turn left here and the starting point is a short distance down this road.(A)

Useful Information

This short Derbyshire walk is one of the first I recorded in my walking diary. On 2nd July 1996 I wrote "Full of variety and interest. Tideswell dale, Litton Mill with its deadly regime, the waterfront of Millers Dale, Ravensdale and the dry valleys of Cressbrook and Tansley Dale meant there was never a dull moment."

If Water cum Jolley dale is flooded there is an alternative route signed down the dale.
If you wish to avoid the dale then cross the river at Litton Mill, walk on Monsal Trail through Litton and Cressbrook tunnels, then at the end of Cressbrook tunnel turn left on signed path fown to Cressbrook Mill.

Very enjoyable walk. The car park charged £4 for 3 hours or £4.75 for the whole day. There was no facility to pay by card or bank notes & no change given. We drove 2 mins up the road to Tideswell to get some change. The weather was good walking weather & we were just in time for lunch at the Red Lion pub at Linton. There were potential areas by Litton Mill along the river that could get flooded at times but we encountered no problems. It was lovely watching the trout swimming in the river.

Excellent walk when we did it in the summer. Could be a bit difficult if river in flood. We were lucky just a bit muddy due to recent heavy rain. Red lion in Litton came at the right time and well worth a visit.

good walk and good directions apart from the "sign" for the turning to Litton is still missing. A previous contributor mentioned this last week and if the walk had been updated then, it would have saved us an extra 2 miles!

Still, the weather was great and the community store/cake shop in Litton is a great stop on a sunny day

Did this walk on Easter Saturday. It was a lovely walk and the views were excellent. Little shop in Litton where we stopped for a coffee and a cake.

A charming walk with plenty of points of interest and fine views.
We started in Tideswell which worked fine and had a good pub lunch in Litton.
Could be muddy in wet weather but otherwise easy to walk on well way marked tracks.
Worth mentioning Peter’s Stone: the Peaks answer to Death Valley in a variety of ways!
We met a lot of other people who didn’t seem to be sure where they were going so we felt rather smug about our good guide.

I have used Hikideas to plan a walk using this route plan for a get-together with some old mates in October.
