Livinhac-le-Haut – Figeac

The twenty-sixth stage of the Way of St James. The days pass, the kilometres fly by and the landscapes change... A few kilometres after leaving Livinhac-le-Haut, you enter the Lot department with new and varied landscapes and that feeling of having arrived in the south, with the cicadas singing and the tiled roofs covering the houses.

Description of the walk

(S) From the campsite, take the D42 south-east towards the Livinhac Bridge.

(1) Cross the bridge, continue along the D21, turning left then right into Rue Camille Couderc, towards Le Faubourg. Head up this narrow street until you reach the D21, which you cross just as carefully as before. Continue straight ahead and turn left into Rue de la République, towards the village centre. Follow the red and white markings which lead you past the church (you can stock up on supplies here at the grocery shop opposite the church). Pass the town hall on your left, along Rue Camille Landes, then turn right onto Rue Camille Couderc and continue to the crossroads.

(2) Cross the D21 carefully and head towards Boisse-Penchot. Continue northwards until you reach the left-hand bend.

(3) Leave the main road and continue along the path, keeping in the same direction. Pass through the hamlet of Aumont and continue on to Thabort.

(4) Turn right, pass through the hamlet of La Treille, then those of Feydel-Haut and Cagnac to reach the junction with the D2.

(5) Turn left to enter the village of Montredon. At the crossroads, turn right towards the community hall (toilets and drinking water available). Head left towards the village centre, go round the church and continue straight on

(6) Head right onto Rue Montredon. Pass through the hamlet of Lalaubie and continue along the tree-lined road until you reach the power line.

(7) Turn left, pass through the hamlet of Tournié and continue to the hamlet of Lacoste.

(8) Turn left and continue until you reach the chapel at Guirande on the D2.

(9) Turn right twice, pass through the hamlet of Guirande

(10) Head right (note: here the route on the ground does not match that on the IGN map), cross the hamlet of Terly to reach the Ruisseau de Guirande lake.

(11) Cross the water and then, following the GR®65 markings, pass through the hamlets of Grévaudan and Levades in turn.

(12) Turn left to cross the hamlet of Les Cordiers, followed by that of La Cipière, then continue to the D2.

(13) Cross the D2 with care and continue along the small tree-lined path to reach the village of Saint-Félix.

(14) Turn right, walk past the church, then turn left just after the inn to head down a narrow street, which leads onto a path heading south.

(15) Head right, still following the red and white markings closely, until you reach the hamlet of La Croix de Jordy.

(16) Head right towards the north-west to the D206 in the hamlet of Le Causse, then turn left and continue to the fire hydrant.

(17) Head right onto the small tree-lined path and continue to the cemetery in the village of Saint-Jean-Mirabel.

(18) After the cemetery, head left, pass the town hall, then continue south-west for 1.7 km along the path running alongside the D2 on the left. Continue to the hamlet of Bel Air. At the last house, leave the main road and continue along the grassy path lined with a hedge of shrubs.

(19) Turn right and follow the GR®65 until you reach the D2. Continue to the right for a few hundred metres, along the path running alongside the main road.

(20) Turn left, heading west towards the TV relay station, and continue until you reach the Chemin des Hauts Roussihle. Continue along this path, passing the Le Pas si Loin lodge.

(21) At the T-junction after the lodge, turn left onto Chemin du Terrier, go under the railway line (note: if you veer right, you can head to Camping Village Domaine du Surgié).
Turn left onto Route du Surgié and continue along the River Célé until you reach the junction with Avenue de Rodez.

(22) Turn right and continue straight on along Allée Victor Hugo until the junction with Avenue Émilie Bouyssou.

(23) At the give way sign, turn right towards Figeac Centre, cross the bridge over the Célé and then turn left to follow the Célé on your left. Continue to the roundabout.

(24) Turn left onto the footbridge over the Célé. At the large car park, turn left to exit, then right onto Route du Cinglé Bas. After the bend, turn left under the railway line.

(25) Stay on this road for about 1 km until you reach the ‘Give Way’ sign.

(26) Turn right, go under the railway line and head left to find your campsite around Plaine des Jeux Jean Baduel (E) (provisions available at Carrefour Marcket opposite the stadium).

Notes

Eating: between (1) and (2) in Livinhac-Le-Haut in the village and at the bakery after the bridge. In Figeac (E).
Camping: in Figeac (21) at Camping Village Domaine du Surgié: Tel 05 61 64 88 54.
As the campsite was closed on the day I passed through, I carried on, went past the town of Figeac and found a lovely spot at the football ground (Plaine des jeux Jean Baduel).

Worth a visit

(9) The Romanesque chapel of Sainte-Marie-de-Guirande contains paintings from the late 11th century; this is the first must-see stop on this stage.

(14) The Romanesque church of Sainte-Radegonde in Saint-Félix-de-Mirabel and its 11th-century tympanum depicting Adam and Eve, the tree and the serpent. Inside the church, note a wrought-iron cross dating from 1783 and a stained-glass window of Saint James.

(23) The old town of Figeac, with its undeniable charm. The defining features of Figeac’s historic architecture are the half-timbering, the corbelled turrets, the Gothic openings, but above all the soleilhos: a high gallery opening beneath the canal-tiled roof between pillars of wood, stone or brick. In this beautiful town, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to listed sites and will certainly run out of time for a comprehensive tour.
