The villages of Labatsus from Esquièze-Sère

An unmissable hike, visiting five villages that look like something out of a mountain ecology textbook. The men and women have tamed the slopes, working tenaciously to make a year-round living from livestock farming, which now boasts an appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) designation. It is thanks to this activity that we have these charming landscapes of high-altitude gardens, flower-filled meadows meticulously bordered by ash hedges, balcony paths and terraces on retaining walls.

Description of the walk

Park in the car park near the Résidence Sère Clos Saint-Michel in Esquièze-Sère.

(S/E) From the car park, head to Avenue de Barège and follow it to the left. Cross the bridge over the Blastan and turn left onto Rue de Barège (D918) and stay on this street until you reach the town hall of Esterre.

(1) Walk about 100 m along the edge of the Route de Barèges, then take the path on the right that climbs through the woods towards Viella (signposted).

(2) At the church in Viella (inn on the left), climb to the top of the village via the street opposite (town hall on the right). At the EDF substation (car park), continue straight ahead on a carriage road, which soon becomes a path after the stream bed.

(3) Climb between the meadows. You will come out onto a road at the corner of a barn. Cut across it to join another road higher up. Turn left at the hangar and stay on this track for about 800 m.

(4) Leave the track for a marked secondary path on the right. Cut across a wider path further up and continue climbing to the carriage road you left below.

(5) Turn right onto the carriageway and follow it for about 600 m.

(6) Just after the Ruisseau d'Alet stream, leave the track and take a path that descends to the left, passing immediately under a barn, towards Betpouey (sign). It cuts through the middle of the meadows, then runs along the left bank of a stream to the village, which you cross. In the lower part of the village, take the access road on the right until you reach the D918.

(7) Cross the Route de Barèges with caution (no pedestrian crossing) and cross the Bastan via the footbridge opposite. Immediately after the bridge, turn right onto a path in a meadow towards a barn. The trail then climbs steeply into the forest, in two large hairpin bends, towards the village of Sers. This leads to a road.

(8) Follow the road that turns left towards the church in Sers, then join another road and follow it to the left.

(9) At the intersection of the fountains, go down a cobbled stairway between the houses on the left, then find the start of a horizontal grassy path on the right. After overlooking a meadow, it descends through a light wood. After a gate (close it behind you), you will reach an intersection of paths and continue to the right, crossing towards Viey.

(10) At the Viey wash house, walk straight towards the centre of the village along a balcony street. Then descend to the left of the church and town hall along a cobbled lane, cross a road and descend towards the bottom of the valley along a forest path opposite.

(11) At the bottom, take the bridge at the waste collection centre to rejoin the D918. Follow it to the right for 150 m , taking care.

(12) Go up to the left on the access road to Viella (D148).

(2) At the church, take the path on the right that you took on the way up to descend to Esterre.

(1) Continue to the car park near the Résidence Sère Clos Saint-Michel in Esquièze-Sère (S/E).

A very pretty circular route, with beautiful villages clinging to the hillside (special mention to Sers). As mentioned in previous posts, the only downside is the section between Esquièze-Sère and Esterre, which runs alongside a road that was very busy when we were there (end of July). Starting from Esquièze, we took the path below Viey, turning right just after the waste collection centre, and returned via Château Ste Marie. Otherwise, it is best to start from Esterre.

A hike that allows you to discover a beautiful village and stunning scenery.
This hike can be complemented by a visit to Ste Marie Castle. This also avoids the tedious walk along the district road.
There is also a very pleasant path between the bottom of the Viey descent and the access road to the castle. This path avoids having to climb back up to the village of Viella.

We chose this hike for our first training hike: 650 m of elevation gain and the same amount of elevation loss for approximately 11 km in 4 hours (including stops) with two people.
We preferred to start from ESTERRE (at the traffic lights, car park on the left, in front of the village hall) and for the return journey, at point 11, we did not cross the bridge and went straight down to ESTERRE.
A beautiful hike with lovely villages to pass through, notably SERS (stop at the LA BERGERIE restaurant to enjoy a blueberry cake).

Hello, everyone.
Hike completed in beautiful weather, lovely hike on good trails, between 4 and 5, I lost track, I took a lower path that brought me back to Betpouey. At 11, just before the bridge over the Bastan, I took a path on the right through the fields signposted Esterre, which took me back to Luz Castle. Then I returned to the car park via the church in Esquièze-Sère, which avoided walking on the pavement as on the way there and made a circular route. Thank you for sharing.

A lovely circular route, but the ideal starting point is at the exit of Luz, in Esterre (turn left at the traffic lights). Crossing Luz on the pavements and along the busy D918 road is not particularly interesting. This saves you more than 3km of pavement walking.
Having parked as described at km 0, for the return journey at Esterre (1) we found it more interesting to cross the bridge and follow the GR10 which passes by Sainte-Marie castle (lovely view of Luz). Finally, we passed in front of Esquièze church and returned to the car.
(3) Carriageway = tarmac road
(5) Turn right onto the tarmac road and follow it for about 600 metres.
