The Three Valleys - From Saint-Julien-du-Serre to Aizac

This first stage of the circular Three Valleys Loop takes you from Saint-Julien-du-Serre to Aizac. After a gentle warm-up on flat terrain in the Oize Valley, discover the land of the chestnut in the Cévennes of the Ardèche! Pass through hamlets tucked away along the paths and picturesque villages: Saint-Andéol-de-Vals, Genestelle, Antraigues-sur-Volane, Aizac. Sometimes at the bottom of the valley, sometimes along the ridge... often in the shade.

This walk is part of a multi-day hike: The three valleys: Volane, Sandron and Oize

Description of the walk

Start from the church car park (you can leave a car there without it being in the way).

(S) Head north and follow a path down to a junction. At the junction of small roads, continue north towards Moulin des Prés (signposted). Keep following this road to the mill (no signposting at present).

(1) At Moulin des Prés, the signposting begins (yellow). Continue straight on (north), leaving the mill on your right. Walk along the valley floor on flat ground to the hamlet of L’Oize.

(2) 100 m before the hamlet, do not turn right down the small dead-end road; cross the bridge over the Oize, enter the hamlet, then take the track on the left (north-west), at the foot of the wayside cross. This track continues to follow the River Oize (on the left bank).

(3) At the Devès bridge, ignore the path climbing up to the right, cross the bridge and continue for about 100 metres. At the “Bois de Bijou” signpost, take the path on the left which climbs steeply up to the village of Saint-Andéols-de-Vals.

(4) You’ll reach the village via a tarmac road; take this to the right for about 50 metres, until you reach the junction with the D 218 and the D 257. Turn right onto the D 257, then immediately left onto the street. At the next junction (hiking signpost), follow the small road to the left towards Vignolles.

(5) Just after Vignolles, ignore the small road on the left which descends towards Jouendeyre and continue on the main road, which gradually turns into a track. Stay on the contour line, ignoring a path descending to the left and then a track coming from the right. This section offers lovely views over the Sandron valley!

(6) At the next junction, turn left (north-east) and continue along the track for 500m.

(7) In a slight bend to the right, take a path on the left at an acute angle (signpost indicating “Abeillaud”); be careful, as this path is not very visible. After about 150m, at a fork in the road, go right. Walk down a gentle, shaded slope to the hamlet of Le Peyron. At the last house, turn left to head down towards the hamlet of Crotte, and just before you reach it, take a sharp left-hand bend to reach the bridge over the Sandron.

(8) Cross the bridge and then the D218 road at a place called l’Abeillaud. Take the path opposite, cross a small road and continue uphill towards the Rieu Colombier farm. Pass the farm on your right, continue along the track and then along a path that continues on to the Genestelle road. Follow this road to the left until you reach the village.

(9) At Genestelle (beautiful viewpoint), continue westwards on this same road and, after a left-hand bend, reach the Col de Genestelle.

(10) At the pass, do not continue along the road ahead but take the track that starts on your right, heading downhill (signpost for Antraigues). Here, you cross over to the Volane side (the third river on the hike). A pleasant descent, crossing a few scree slopes, offering lovely views of Antraigues-sur-Volane below and the Col d’Aizac (your destination) on the opposite side. Continue along the main path, ignoring the offshoots to the left and right.

(11) Cross the Pont de Gamond, at the foot of Antraigues-sur-Volane, and climb up the opposite side (paved slanting street) towards the village of Jean Ferrat. At the first houses, turn left to reach the village square. From the square, take the only road out, passing in front of the bakery. Then turn left onto the road leading down towards the Volane (west), passing the post office and the school. Follow it for about 1 km.

(12) At the junction with the D 578, cross the Volane and, immediately after the bridge, turn left onto theGRP® (red and yellow markings) which climbs up to Aizac. Cross a small road, pass near the hamlet of Les Blanchons and head up the valley. You’ll come out onto a road; follow it to the left until you reach the village (sign for “Col d’Aizac 642m”) (E).

Ah, yes, at the Moulin de Charrier!!! I’m sure that if you’d looked a bit harder, you could have found further afield... yes, really!!!!

Hello Eric

Tired, yes!! But we stayed at the Moulin de Charrier in Labastide-sur-Bésorgues to eat and sleep, which is a good 12km there and back.

But it’s a lovely walk to do and do again – the scenery is magnificent.

Hello Yves!
If you weren’t able to find accommodation in Aizac, it’s because, as is the case every year, the Volcan d’Aizac guesthouse was closed during the second half of September!
Even so, you can still eat and stay overnight in Antraigues/Volane, 3 km away... so 6 km there and back... not 12!!! ... perhaps you were just tired?

A superb two-day hike in the Ardèche. BEWARE of the heat – there are a few climbs with some elevation gain.
You’ll need to make your own arrangements for accommodation and food; we had to stay 6 km from Aizac, which is 12 km further than the route.
Otherwise, the route description is well done; we hardly ever lost our way.
