Circular of hamlets starting from Ucel

This circular route starts at Ucel church and climbs up to the château and then the hermitage, taking you to the hamlet of Fromenteyrol. It then passes the hamlet of Crottes de Saint-Julien-du-Serre, leading you to Sandron and then the communal woods of Ucel.
Ideal for enjoying the colours of autumn or the blooms of spring.

Description of the walk

Park in one of the two car parks at Ucel Church, one behind the church and the other just above it.
Please note that part of this hike is not marked, and where it is marked, it is only with yellow and white markers (PR®).

(S/E) Head east towards the old school and pass it. You will come to a three-way crossroads.

(1) Turn right, walk along the cemetery towards the nursing home. Do not go all the way to the nursing home: turn right into Rue du Moulin, go downhill and cross the bridge over the Sandron, then follow the road uphill to the right. At the crossroads, follow the sign on the left and take the paved slanting street (rue en pente pavée) that leads to the castle.

(2) Keep to the left and follow the yellow and white marked Ermitage route as you climb another paved slanting street, this time a longer one. At the end of the paved slanting street, turn left and follow the signs. You will reach the Ermitage.

(3) Set off again, climbing a few steps that you will find by retracing your steps slightly. Continue north-east on the path to reach a very wide sandy track.

(4) Take it slightly to the left until you reach Fromenteyrol and enjoy the view as you pass.

(5) Leave the marked trail here and take the tarmac fork just after on your left.
Shortly afterwards, leave the asphalt to climb a few flat rocks. Continue to reach a fork at the hamlet of Tardieu.

(6) Before reaching the road, take a small path marked in yellow and white on the left. Follow the road away from the traffic, but you will then have to continue straight ahead on the tarmac for a few dozen metres. At a hairpin bend, turn left onto a path where there is a cistern.

(7) Continue along this path, keeping to the left. You will then descend for quite some time along a fairly wide path. Continue to the end of this wide path.
Continue straight ahead on the path that follows it. Make a 180° turn to reach the cairn at the Riailles crossroads.

(8) Take the narrow path on the left. Please note: it is not clearly visible and is not marked. The access to this path is almost 180°, which is why it is not easy to see.
Follow it to the Pont du Sandron or Pont Vieux bridge. Here you can take a break by the water.

(9) Continue along the Sandron, straight ahead to the Pont Neuf.

(10) Cross the bridge and continue along the right bank of the Sandron. Move slightly away from the stream and walk until you reach the hamlet of Bréchignac at the Camping des Pins campsite. Keep going straight ahead and join the road.

(11) Take the road on the right to cross the hamlet of Brechignac, then continue along it until you reach the crossroads you passed on the way there, just after the nursing home.

(1) Follow the outward route to return to the church car park (S/E).

Notes

This is a fairly easy hike, with a slight incline at the start and a very short, steep descent before reaching the Sandron.
It is best to do this hike in the spring or autumn as it can be very hot in summer. Also be careful after heavy rain, as some sections will be impassable.
Wear good shoes as the paths are quite stony and wet, of course.
The return trip through the communal woodland may be cooler/damp than the rest of the hike, so bring appropriate clothing for the season.

Worth a visit

Ucel Castle and the large village.
The Hermitage.
360° views of the surrounding hills (Bauzon, Aubenas, the Plateau de Ville, Sainte Marguerite).
On the way, you will probably come across donkeys just before you start the descent towards the Sandron.
Take a break by the Sandron (there is a small, easily accessible beach at the lowest point of the path leading to the Ucel communal wood).

Always be cautious and plan ahead when you're outdoors. Visorando and the author of this route cannot be held responsible for any accidents occurring on this route.

A very beautiful hike; I knew the part that goes directly down from Fromenteyrol to Pont Neuf, but not the part that leads to Pont Vieux.
I extended the walk a little with a few detours, including a visit to the old Ucel, as I was with someone who didn't know it.

Taken in January after two days of heavy rain. This adds a special charm to this hike, with some trails transformed into mini streams.
It is pleasant, alternating between pine, oak and other types of forest. The section of the trail that descends and joins "Le Sandron" is rather monotonous, but you will smile again as soon as you reach the path that runs alongside it to the new bridge.
An easy hike; in spring or autumn, the colours must be spectacular.

superb hike on a sunny day, a little windy but sheltered for most of the route. Lovely views. Hike without any difficulty. Worth doing even in summer as it is well shaded. Varied route in terms of the paths taken, very pleasant section along the stream

A lovely, easy hike, but partly in the rain. Worth doing again in spring when the sun is shining so you can enjoy the beautiful scenery!

Hi community, a great, peaceful hike, just like its twin starting from the castle. Both are recommended for beginner hikers or walkers as they are very peaceful, pleasant and beautiful. For those who want to explore the Ardèche without getting too tired, it's great!!!
Just one little thing at point 7: before going downhill, you have to climb a slight incline for quite a while, but just follow the path and you'll be fine!
I did the hike on 13/01/24 in very cold weather (it hadn't thawed) and the path at point eight is very clear, but in this weather you have to be careful not to slip into the river as the path overlooks it, but it's fine.
A pleasant hike.
Take care and
best wishes for your backpacking in 2024.

Very nice hike, which included wide paths as well as a section with a narrow trail (along the river). The two car parks at the church were almost full. You can also park at the cemetery, where the circular trail begins.

A very pretty circular for this region. We explored Old Ucel in depth and really enjoyed the second part of the route, along the Sandron. Be careful, if you want to cool your toes, get down into the river bed as soon as you can, because afterwards it's more difficult as the path remains high up

No problems on this lovely, fairly easy route. When you reach the river, if you want to take a dip, get in as soon as you can because further on there are hardly any opportunities.

As I already mentioned, there is a big mistake in the description of this route. The "terminus" of the path mentioned has been moved, and if you go there, you won't find anything (no path opposite). The description needs to be changed.

Hello,

Please note that it is difficult to tell the difference between the old bridge and the new bridge.

The Pont du Sandron or Pont Vieux is located at the point (9)
The Pont Neuf is located at the point (10)

See you soon!
