The natural sites of the Bois des Aresquiers and the Salins de Frontignan

A walk to discover the unspoilt natural areas of a highly urbanised coastal region. You’ll cross the Bois des Arresquiers before exploring the marshes and old salt marshes. At the end of the route, I suggest a break on the beach.

Description of the walk

Park in the Bois des Aresquiers car park.

(S/E) Set off along the path heading south-west, passing between two information boards. This first section of the walk is marked in yellow. Further on, the path shown on the IGN map that runs straight along the Étang de l’Ingril has been closed. Follow the yellow markings, moving away from the pond.

(1) At the fork in the path, keep to the right even though the path on the left is marked. You will find the yellow markings again a little further on. Continue straight ahead at the crossroads, and at the T-junction turn left. Continue straight on, ignoring any side paths. You will arrive at the Fontaine des Aresquiers, which consists of a drystone shelter and a small drinking trough.

(2) Carry on straight ahead, ignoring the side paths. At the junction, walk a few metres to the left to reach another junction. Turn right and you will immediately come across an information board about the Salins de Frontignan Protected Natural Site.

(3) Ignore the path on the left (which will be the return route) and head diagonally to the right. At the next junction, there are two options:
- in dry weather, during the summer, you can take the yellow-marked path straight ahead.
- In early April, the path was flooded a little further on. The route therefore follows the track which you reach after a few steps on the right. Follow it to the left for another section through the woods.

(4) At the next junction, take the boardwalk path. It returns to a dirt track further on.

(5) At the next crossroads just after a footbridge, continue straight ahead (yellow markings). Stay on this path, as there are no other options, and it changes direction several times.

(6) At the next junction, follow the path to the right and, at the information board about the salt pans, take the path to the left. Further on, you will find an information board about bird nesting sites. At the next junction, turn left towards the buildings of the former salt works. You will arrive in the courtyard of the complex.

Information boards, viewing terrace (we were able to take a break on the columned esplanade without being bothered by mosquitoes).

(7) Continue along the path that runs behind the esplanade with the pillars, turn left at the junction after a few metres, then right immediately afterwards. Then follow this path as it winds through the salt marshes. You will come to a junction you passed on the way there.

(3) Continue straight on along a path that soon becomes a boardwalk. You will see the yellow markings again.

(8) At the junction, continue straight on along the path. Ignore a path on the right. At the T-junction, follow the path to the right and stick to the yellow markings, ignoring the more or less marked side paths. At the junction, keep to the right, as close as possible to the pond.

(9) At the next T-junction, turn right. Pass the closed path on the right and arrive at the junction of the circular route.

(1) Follow the outward route in the opposite direction back to the car park.

(S/E) Continue to the road and follow it to the right, along the cycle path. Before the bridge over the Canal du Rhône, head down to the right to pass under the bridge and take the ramp on the left which leads up to the bridge. You can then use this to cross the canal on the cycle path.

(10) On the other side, at the Conservatoire du Littoral information board, follow the boardwalk leading to the pebble seawall. You can go down to the very narrow beach on the other side, by the sea. You can cross back over the seawall to the right using the first dedicated footbridge. Then return to the road at the entrance to the bridge.

(10) Cross the bridge again. On the other side, instead of following the road again, you can cross the small car park below the bridge, then follow its access road to the right to return to the Bois des Aresquiers car park (S/E).

Notes

A hike of moderate difficulty, leaning towards easy; standard hiking gear is required, and don’t forget a hat in summer.

Mosquito repellent is essential; in some places, swarms of thousands of mosquitoes will rise up as you pass, even in early spring.

After heavy rain, some sections may be impassable.

This route passes through multiple protected areas, which may be subject to special regulations:
