The painted cisterns of La Gardiole

This hike allows you to discover the six painted cisterns of La Gardiole and enjoy the many views from the massif. Views of the Cévennes massif in the first part, then of the sea in the second part. At Le Pioch Noir, if the weather is favourable, you can see both Canigou to the west and Mont Ventoux to the east.

Description of the walk

The starting point is in the Col de la Tortue car park, between Mireval and Fabrèques. Park on the left when coming from Mireval. Opposite is another car park with a graffitied cistern: do not park on the side where this cistern is located.

(S/E) Start with your back to the road (D114) and head towards a fork.

(1) Turn right and follow the yellow markings. Opposite the Bergerie de Saumade, turn left and head towards the first painted cistern.

(2) Continue along the track, keep left at the three-way junction and continue for about 100 metres.

(3) Turn left towards the botanical garden, then right to cross it.

(4) At the exit, turn right and continue to follow the yellow markings. You will come to a track which you should follow to the left until you reach the first crossroads.

(5) Turn left, heading south, leaving the markings, then rejoin them at Bergerie Neuve.

(6) Turn left, following the Cit'Art sign.

(7) Make a short first turn left then right with the yellow markings, turn left at the T-junction and head for the second painted cistern.

(8) Take the path on the left.

(9) Turn right and follow the main path to go around the Pioch des Jasses.

(10) Continue left at the fork and climb up to the Plan de Lacan plateau.

(11) At the top, turn right, leaving the yellow markings, and reach the third and fourth painted cisterns.

(12) Turn left onto what serves as a short airstrip.

(13) Turn left at the end of the runway and walk along the eastern edge of the plateau.

(14) Turn right to make a round trip to Pioch Noir: viewpoint. Then resume the route by going straight ahead to reach the fifth cistern, located on the left.

(15) Leave the track that runs along the Combe de l'Arbousier and follow the ridge leading to Pioch de Camille.

(16) Continue straight ahead and begin a steep descent leading to an intersection. Turn diagonally to the right and continue for about 200 m.

(17) Take the small path on the right (large vertical rock at the crossroads) and climb a short distance to a viewpoint overlooking the Gardiole massif on one side and the sea on the other. Descend, turn right at the bottom and reach the sixth and last cistern.

(18) Take the path behind it and continue to a T-junction.

(19) Turn left and make a 90° left turn with the path to reach the first fork you passed at the start.

(1) Turn right and return to the car park (S/E).

(15) You can avoid the steep descent after Pioch de Camille by following the track on the right along Combe de l'Arbousier. The descent is less steep and more gradual.

Pleasant hike. Well-maintained paths. Magnificent views. Not too steep. The only problem is that there are a lot of mosquitoes in some places.

As a big fan of the Clape massif, I was keen to discover the Gardiole massif thanks to this hike, which I thoroughly enjoyed overall, even though it's rather poorly named. Most of its cisterns could do with a major facelift. Only one of them is original and aesthetically pleasing on both sides (see photos). Dear artists, let your creativity flow and breathe new life into these large pieces of scrap metal so that they become completely natural elements. Thank you again for this Land Art that is available to everyone.

A very beautiful short hike in the stunning Gardiole region. Lots of cars in the car park but few people on the hiking trail. Pleasant tracks and paths. The view of the ponds, the sea and Mont Ventoux in the distance is magnificent.
Several options for extending the hike. The entire hike is off-road, which is very enjoyable.

Pleasant morning hike.
Lovely views on a clear day.
Stop for lunch near the small orientation table because the view is splendid.
A slightly more technical descent that can be avoided by taking the path on the right.
In conclusion: a lovely walk to do during the week. Too crowded on Sundays.

Very beautiful landscape and magnificent view of FRONTIGNAN and the sea.
A slightly steep descent but fairly short at the end among the rocks.
I recommend it.

An easily adaptable route, mainly on DFCI tracks, with a strong presence of mountain bikes. Interesting artwork on the cisterns, beautiful panoramic views between points 13 and 14 and from the top of Pioch de Camille. The steep and rugged descent after point 16 is partly over scree. Due to lack of time, we shortened the route and went directly from point 17 to point 1.
Thank you for sharing.

A pleasant hike to be done in fine weather to enjoy the sea or mountain views. A suggestion: take the route in reverse to better enjoy the scenery... but there is a tough climb between 17 and 16.
