Start from the car parks at the bottom of Rocamadour; a short warm-up is recommended before setting off on the walk.
(S/E) Head up into the town along the uphill road and cross through it to exit via the lower gate after descending the Coustalou (a short slope in Occitan), which is best tackled in this direction rather than the other way round. Cross the road and go over the bridge over the Alzou to continue along the path that turns right.
(1) Before tackling a difficult climb, stop briefly at the Berthiol fountain. Continue along the path , taking care as you are on the edge of the cliff in places and the path can be slippery in wet weather.
Stay alert.
(2) After a tricky uphill section, you’ll reach the Saut de la Mule, where you’ll find a viewpoint overlooking the Alzou canyon. Continue uphill and cross the road. Try to climb the stony path opposite, then carry on straight ahead across the Causse.
(3) To the left of the path: the cloup (a rather impressive sinkhole). Carry on along the Chemin de Saint-Jacques straight ahead until you reach the road.
(4) Turn left towards Lake Saint-Namphaise, which is used to water the sheep. You can quickly cycle round it before continuing along the gently ascending road.
(5) The Dolmen des Places, where you’ll find a superb viewpoint.
From there, head straight down south to rejoin theGR® 46, which you’ll take to the left.
(6) At a bend, turn right onto a small downhill path leading to the road.
If you miss the path, carry on downhill, but be careful as it’s dangerous when you reach the road: you’ll have to carry your bike down.
(7) Crossroads. Turn right at the bottom of the road and follow the path to the right, heading due west, along the valley floor on a gentle descent. After a short walk, you’ll reach the Gouffre de Poumayssen on the right-hand side of the path.
(8) You’ll need to leave the path and head downhill to see it. Then rejoin the stony path and arrive at the Gouffre de Cabouy, where the River Ouysse emerges from the ground.
(9) After your visit, head back the way you came to go round it on the left and continue along an easy path.
(10) Go through the gate on the right.
(11) You’ll reach the Saint-Sauveur chasm, then return to the gate.
(10) Take the path leading uphill to the right towards the Bonnecoste barns.
Caution: long, steep climb (approx. 12%).
(12) At the top, turn left onto the road and pass through the Bonnecoste barns, continuing straight on along the road.
(13) Turn left onto the D39 and follow this pleasant road all the way down.
(14) Continue along the track on the right, which will take you to Couzou. You can let go of the brakes – it’s completely flat all the way to the D32.
(15) Turn left onto the D32 and head up to the village of Couzou, which you’ll pass through.
(16) After passing through Couzou, take theGR® 46 (on the left just before the sheepfolds). Follow the flat path and turn right downhill (put your hands back on the brakes). You’ll rejoin the road and come to the crossroads.
(7) Continue to the right, then left, along the path which climbs (especially towards the end) onto the plateau.
(17) Cross the road and take the dirt track. When you reach a fork, turn left and follow the track. There are no further difficulties.
(18) Begin a tricky descent which starts with an S-bend but is fairly straight afterwards. Stay alert. Like the first one, it’s easier going this way than the other.
(19) Return to the road and the car park (S/E).
