Thank you for your follow-up. At 70, we haven’t been climbing trees for a long time now , and we’d like to thank you for looking after our old legs, which will no doubt be back on this trail when the fine weather we’re hoping for arrives, both here and elsewhere.

Thank you for your comments. I’ve just re-checked the route; there were a few trees blocking the path, so I’ve cleared them away. It’s true that many of the signs had fallen over, so I’ve put them back up. Please do have another go at the route and let me know what you think.

On electric mountain bikes on Saturday 26 June 2021:
We enjoyed the views from the ridges, the springs and the sections through the woodland. That’s what I love about the Causse du Lot: these refreshing little surprises. Unfortunately, we didn’t spot the dolmens, no doubt because of the forests littered with fallen trees following the storm on 20 June.
The mountain bike route is rather poorly signposted; you have to keep your eyes peeled. The trails for the first two-thirds of the route are decent, though a bit technical on the descent into the valley. However, the subsequent single tracks are poorly maintained and overgrown with brambles and tall grass, so our legs really took a beating. At Ussac we turned back because the single track was blocked by a tree that had fallen after the storm on 20 June. It’s clear that this trail is rarely used and needs better maintenance, but the discoveries are well worth it. Worth doing again at the end of summer when hikers have been there – more often, I hope – and the grass has dried out in the Lot sunshine.

A magnificent route, done on an e-bike, very smooth going; a bit too much road at times, but the roads are narrow and stunning! A lovely way to explore the area, with dolmens, gariottes and stone walls galore!
Well maintained and very well signposted!
Well done and thank you!

A very scenic and challenging mountain bike route (a proper ‘red’ route). It took us 3½ hours. There are sections with ledges, some lovely but very stony descents (make sure your tyre pressure is correct, otherwise you’re at high risk of punctures), almost perfect signposting (if you feel like you’re lost, just keep going straight on), the dolmens; a slightly longish finish around the village of St Chels; a very welcome water point right at the end. Otherwise, a route that’s rarely used, with branches, brambles, tall grass and nettles... proper mountain biking.

A perfectly signposted route from start to finish – it’s impossible to get lost.
A few steep climbs, but they’re rewarded with stunning views. We completed the route on e-MTBs (around 2½ hours in ‘leisure mode’, with plenty of photo stops).

Hello,
As I have a house in St Chels, I know the area very well. I haven’t done the full route as described, but I can assure you that you’ll discover some magnificent, very undulating landscapes. A succession of ridges and lovely valleys, with sections winding through boxwood groves. This hike is listed as a mountain bike route but is also manageable in a day for keen walkers. My partner and I have done most of the route as part of our running training.
