The hamlets of L'Escoulin and Eygluy

A circular hike to discover the hamlets of L'Escoulin and Eygluy, formerly separate communes in two parallel valleys. In 1971, they merged to form Eygluy-Escoulin!
Along the route, there are beautiful views of the mountains and peaks of southern Vercors and you can discover the small local heritage of this region of Diois.
The route is easy, following either carriage roads or quiet country lanes.

Description of the walk

From Crest and Blacon, head towards Beaufort-sur-Gervanne.
At the mini roundabout in the village, turn right towards Eygluy-Escoulin. About a kilometre further on, after crossing a bridge on the right, continue straight on towards Escoulin.
In the hamlet of L'Escoulin, park in the car park on the right, opposite the town hall, on the banks of the Sépie.

(S/E) Return along the D712 for about 400 metres.

(1) Leave the departmental road and turn left onto the very recent footbridge over the Sépie, which immediately leads to a track. Follow this track (accessible by 4x4) to the left and uphill for about 2 kilometres to the Col de Fonteuse. Ignore all paths or tracks to the right or left. After 2 hairpin bends at the start, this track is almost straight, facing south, and the slope is constant until the pass.
You will arrive at Col de Fonteuse, which is marked by a small tarmac area (no sign).

(2) Take the tarmac road on the far right (D590A), which starts with a barrier (open) on the right and a post box on the left. Follow this road, uphill for the first 100 metres, then downhill to the D590 for about 2 kilometres. Ignore all unpaved paths on the right and left.
You will arrive at the D590, a dead-end road that only serves the hamlet of Eygluy.

(3) Turn right towards this hamlet. Cross it and continue straight up the main road to the Col de Véraut (small signs under the "library" shelter on the right after the chapel).
Arrive at Col de Véraut.

(4) Turn right and about 10 metres further on, take the track on the left (also suitable for 4x4s) which begins to descend slightly. Follow it downhill to the first houses where it becomes tarmac.
Arrive at the D172 which leads to L'Escoulin.

(5) Follow this road to the right for about 600 metres.

(6) At the crossroads, take the road on the left leading to the church (sign), which serves as a landmark. Follow this road uphill and at the next crossroads, about 1 km away, continue to the right (sign for "Eglise" barely legible).

(7) L'Escoulin Church. You may wish to visit the cemetery, take a break on the bench south of the church and continue straight ahead along a stony path that descends towards the departmental road (faint yellow markings).

(8) When you reach the D172, follow it to the left until you reach the town hall (S/E).

Notes

The detour to the chapel of L'Escoulin is, of course, optional. In this case, once you reach the road at point (5), follow it to the right to go directly to the car park, ignoring point (6)!

At the start, there is a tap under the covered area to the left of the town hall in L'Escoulin. In Eygluy, there is a water fountain under the shelter after the chapel (next to the "library"). There are no other water sources along the route...

The route is mainly on 4x4 tracks or very quiet roads (out of season). So there are no technical difficulties!
Be careful, as there are almost no signs or markings (just a few sparse yellow lines!). In L'Escoulin, people seem to ignore Eygluy, and in Eygluy, they seem to ignore L'Escoulin!

The ruins of L'Escoulin Castle are private and off-limits, but you can get close enough to take a photo!
The hilltop chapel in L'Escoulin was locked when I visited.

Worth a visit

The Omblèze Gorges and the Druise waterfall are a few kilometres away.
The town of Die, its cathedral and its famous Clairette (more than just a sparkling wine, very fruity).
The town of Crest and its keep (the highest in France).
Plenty of other hikes in the Vercors (Plateau d'Ambel) and Diois (Trois Becs) mountain ranges...

A beautiful hike with very good information. We did it on a slightly overcast day (but without rain or showers), so some aspects of the landscape and views were not particularly spectacular.
We would happily do it again in better weather.

A very pleasant walk with beautiful views. We climbed via the GRP trail leading to the Col de Vachères, crossed the Taillefer, descended to the Col de Fonteuse and then followed the route described in the guidebook. Thank you to the author for this wonderful suggestion.

A short hike that allows you to discover the two hamlets of Escoullin and Eygluy.
It takes you through some very quiet areas where you can enjoy the fresh air.
I recommend the refreshment bar in Eygluy. There, we found ourselves in a timeless place. What a joy!

After a somewhat challenging initial climb, it is a lovely walk; we did not encounter a soul.
The sandwich break, sitting on the bench in front of the chapel facing magnificent landscapes, makes you forget the effort.
However, there are some fairly long tarmac sections, even though the roads are not busy, which is why I think this walk would be less enjoyable in very hot weather.

A very beautiful hike. We did it backwards and extended it by going around Merly in Eygluy. A little too much tarmac for my liking, but the view is so magnificent that it makes you forget the inconvenience of the roads. We only came across one car and no other hikers.
Thank you to the author of this hike.

Although I know the area, I had never done the route as suggested. It's quite a physically demanding route, especially with the first climb.
Beautiful views of southern Vercors. Best done in the morning when it's warm.
