Description of the walk

The car park is located on Allée des Frênes along the A40, just after the large bend, coming from Clermont-Ferrand. It is next to a cross.

(S/E) From the car park, take the path leading to the tunnel that goes under the A42 (signposted). On the other side of the road, take the road that climbs to the right until you reach a four-way junction.

(1) Continue climbing straight ahead through the forest. As you emerge from the forest, you’ll reach a flat area

(2) Continue along the path on the hillside to climb Puy Giroux; see the practical information section. Turn right and head towards a T-junction.

(3) Take the path on the right which winds through the fields. When you reach a cross, the path turns right and climbs steeply; just before the A-road, it turns sharply right. Keep to the right to avoid heading towards the A-road, and return to the junction from the outward journey.

(1) Head back down the road you took on the way there, turning left, go under the tunnel to reach the car park (S/E).

Thinking we’d only be walking for an hour and a half at most, we found ourselves in the dark, 2 km from our car, and forced to walk along a very busy road… but which signposting should we follow?

A pleasant short walk, mostly shaded in summer.

A nice, leisurely walk.
The view of the surrounding area was lovely despite the gloomy weather; when the weather’s fine, it must be stunning.

A family walk with a four-and-a-half-year-old boy and a baby in a baby carrier; the climb up Le Puy is lovely, with moss-covered Scots pine woodland, a very idyllic setting and a beautiful view from the top. A lovely walk! Thank you! I think you can do a similar route starting from the pretty village of Opme, with the added bonus of a small castle and a village to visit...
