The Etangs du Grand Voyeux and the Trois Rivières

At the confluence of the Marne, Ourcq and Thérouanne rivers, the ponds and reed beds of the Grand Voyeux regional estate are home to a huge number of birds. The walk begins on the observation path of this protected natural site. It then hops along the River Thérouanne, along the Canal de L'Ourcq and the Canal de la Thérouanne, and ends along the Marne. Water and birds are the main attractions on this route!

Description of the walk

Park in the town hall car park at Congis-sur-Thérouanne (12km north-east of Meaux and 18km north-west of La-Ferté-sous-Jouarre).

Unmarked

(S/E) From the town hall car park, take the road on your left (Rue de la Poste). Immediately cross a river (the Thérouanne) and head towards the church.

(1) At the church, turn left onto the D121E towards Isles-les-Meldeuses. After about 100 metres, at a fork in the road, leave the D121E and turn right towards Montier. After another hundred metres, at another fork, turn left (south) onto Chemin de l'Epine Blanche.

(2) Just after passing a large white hangar on the right of the road, look out for a black gate on the left: a few dozen metres past this gate, take a passageway that leads into the nature reserve (information panel). Descend briefly in a right-left zigzag, leaving a "Domaine du Grand Voyeux" sign on your right, and head towards a blue "Protected species refuge area" sign at the foot of a pine tree.

Follow the path (not shown on the map) eastwards through the pines and then the birch trees. At a T-junction, turn right towards a barrier behind which you can see a pond. At the gate, turn left onto a wide path between the trees (the pond is still visible on your right). You will come to a sort of grassy roundabout with an observation post on the right: don't hesitate to spend some time there.

(3) From the observation post, continue east along the wide track, which soon opens out into a meadow on your right. The path bends to the right, with the meadow still on your right. You will come to an open space (fence on the right). Turn left at a right angle and walk along a pond on your right. Go through a metal barrier and emerge onto the D121E road.

Red and white signs

(4) Cross the road and continue straight ahead towards the Villers-lès-Rigault power plant (sign). When you reach the entrance to this very large building (sign), turn left at a right angle onto a path lined with plane trees. Cross two perpendicular streets, go to the end of the path towards a small white building and emerge onto the Canal de l'Ourcq.

Yellow markings

Let the GR® go right and turn left onto the towpath, with the canal on your right.

(5) Just after passing the Pont des Carreaux, at a fork, take the right-hand lane and stay along the canal. Just before the next bridge, leave the towpath (which passes under the bridge) and take a steep left to join the D121E road (see a variant in the practical information section).

Red and white markings

(6) Cross the canal and immediately turn left towards the canal. After a few metres, at a fork, do not go back to the canal bank but take the path on the right that enters a wood. The path bends to the right and joins the River Thérouanne (on your left). Continue along the edge of a wood (poplars on your left) and a cultivated field (on your right).

(7) After a long straight stretch, leave the boundary path and turn left at a right angle to enter the wood and join the Thérouanne. At a T-junction, turn left, cross the river and climb slightly towards a bridge over the Canal de la Thérouanne.

Yellow markings

(8) Do not cross the bridge but turn right onto the towpath. Follow the canal on your left for approximately 1.8km. At a bend, find the river below on the right and note a football stadium on the opposite bank (how many balls have been lost in the water?) At the end of a straight stretch, reach a bridge, with a gate on the right and a barrier and gate system opposite.

(9) Turn left at a right angle and cross the canal (information panel on the right). Go up the track opposite to a small road. Turn right onto the road (on the right is a beautiful view of the Château du Gué). Find the river below on the right and note the buildings of a technical college on the opposite bank.

(10) Before entering the hamlet (house with red-tiled roof), leave the road and take a path that climbs to the left between two cultivated fields. Shortly after the top of the hill, ignore a perpendicular track on the left (which leads into a field). A few metres further on, just as the main path seems to get lost in the field on the right, veer left onto a path that starts between two trees, each bearing a yellow marker. The path descends steeply and leads about ten metres above the Canal de l'Ourcq.

(11) Turn right at a sharp angle. Stay on the path for a good kilometre as it winds through the undergrowth, still high above the canal (on your left). Go past the canal weir on the opposite bank (marked "vanne" on the IGN map), which can be identified by the sound of a waterfall. At a fork in the road, take the left-hand lane and go downhill for a few metres. Turn right onto a path with wooden steps that leads down to the entrance of a tunnel under the canal.

(12) At the bottom of the descent, turn left and enter the tunnel, which has a paved floor. There is usually water flowing or trickling down, so keep to the sides, literally "keeping your head above the water". On leaving the tunnel, cross two metal bars and come out on the edge of the D121. Immediately turn left onto a path that leads up to the edge of the canal. Follow the towpath to the right (north-east) and reach the weir. Continue along the canal for approximately 900m.

(13) After a small house with a zinc roof on the right, look out for a path on the right (yellow arrow). Ifyou see a "Congis-sur-Thérouanne" sign on the opposite bank, turn back. Leave the towpath and take the path. Cross the D121 (take care) at a slight angle to the left. Take the path that goes off to the right at an acute angle and runs alongside a wall on your right. Bend left and head south-west between two hedges of trees. Reach the right bank of the Marne at Port la Pierre.

(14) Turn left and head upstream along the Marne, which is on your right. After approximately 200m, the path bends left to run alongside the right-hand bank of the Marne, alongside Ile de l'Ancre. Cross the Thérouanne just before its mouth. Bend left and move away from the edge of the Marne. Make a left-right zigzag and emerge onto a wider track at a place called La Gueule du Ru.

(15) Turn left at right-angles onto a track between cultivated fields. The track bends right twice and comes out into a street (Rue des Grands Prés). Pass Rue de la Marne coming from the right and enter Rue de la Pierre Lorraine. Turn left into this street. At the stop sign opposite the church, turn slightly left into rue de la Poste.

(1) Go past the church, cross the Thérouanne one last time and return to the town hall car park (S/E).

Notes

The Domaine Régional du Grand Voyeux is a protected natural site and, as such, access to it is strictly regulated. Only the northern path (the one used for this walk) is open to the public. Read the information signs carefully and follow all the instructions. In particular, do not attempt to venture off the path and note that dogs are not allowed on the estate.

Marking is rare, either because the route is obvious along the canals, or because of the scarcity of support material. A 1:25,000 scale map is therefore essential (at least the one that accompanies this description).
The tunnel under the Canal de l'Ourcq is short enough not to require a headlamp.

The towpath along the Canal de l'Ourcq is stabilised, and the towpath along the Canal de la Thérouanne remains stable in wet weather, as does the observation trail at the Domaine du Grand Voyeux. The corresponding sections of the route are therefore passable all year round. In wet weather, however, the path along the River Thérouanne, between (6) and (8), and the path along the River Marne, between (14) and (15), are muddy, and the banks of the Marne may even flood in the event of flooding (see variants below).

Alternatives:

- To avoid the steep climb to the D121E (particularly if the terrain is greasy) - At the fork after the Pont des Carreaux (5), take the left-hand lane (red and white markings) rather than the right-hand lane.

- To avoid the banks of the Thérouanne - At the point (6) (bridge over the Canal de l'Ourcq), do not take the steep path but pass under the bridge and continue along the towpath to the next bridge, the Congis lift bridge. Use this bridge to cross the canal and continue along the road opposite. Turn right at the cemetery. After the cemetery, the road becomes a path that leads to the Pont de la Fesse, on the Canal de la Thérouanne, which you cross to turn immediately left onto the towpath and return to the route at the point (8). The distances are similar.

- To avoid the banks of the Marne - From the Canal de l'Ourcq weir, follow the canal as far as the Congis lift bridge (signposted at hill 62), ignoring the path (yellow arrow) that leads off to the right. At the bridge, turn right down the road. At the stop sign, turn right into Rue de la Poste (D121E towards Isles-les-Meldeuses). Follow this road as far as the Mairie and return to the starting point. Allow around 1.5km less.

Worth a visit

The Domaine Régional du Grand Voyeux is an ornithological reserve frequented by many species of breeding, wintering and migratory birds. There is a bird-watching post on the "North" path of the reserve at (3). The association that manages this protected natural area offers events and supervised outings, the latter giving small groups access to sites not usually open to the public. For more information, visit the AVEN du Grand Voyeux website.

In Congis-sur-Thérouanne :
- Church of Saint-Rémi (12th-14th-17th-19th centuries), close to the starting point.
- Villiers-lès-Rigault power station, between (4) and . Group visits possible, please enquire.
- Château du Gué, near (9).

On the way:
- Canal de l'Ourcq. At (11), there is a tunnel under the canal and a weir nearby.
- Canal de la Thérouanne.
- Right bank of the Marne.

A very beautiful hike, but not to be attempted in rainy weather as the path from point 11 to 12 is narrow in places.
The entrance to the tunnel is not easy to find. The steps are wet. Caution is advised for those who are not experienced hikers.
The last step is quite high. I placed large pieces of cut wood there to make it easier to access without getting your feet wet. The tunnel is not very long. Walk on either side of it to avoid getting your feet wet.
There has been a landslide upstream just before the barrier on the right at the bottom of the stairs. It would be advisable to secure this area. I have cleared the stairs, which were blocked by tree trunks and branches.
At this point, I would say that the tunnel is passable.

A very pleasant route, especially in spring and on a very sunny day. The scenery is varied, from skirting the ponds of Le Voyeux, where there are a number of observatories for those who want to take the time to watch the birds, through forests and fields on the edge of woods, and along the Ourcq canal. The tunnel crossing was the most epic part of the walk, but there was very little water because the access is quite steep.

It's a nice little walk without too many changes in altitude and away from the crowds.
The main point of interest is crossing the tunnel, which is very unusual. A real stream runs through it, and you walk with your feet in the water.
The walk along the Therouane canal is also very pleasant.
Highly recommended!

A very pretty walk with a wide variety of landscapes. (The only downside between points 11 and 12, downed trees and tangled branches:

Fun to ride
Areas with tall grass that make the paths disappear
At point 11, the passage under the Ourcq canal through the tunnel is surprising but very original 😀 Bring waterproof shoes! There is a bit of water in this tunnel, and it's slippery. The path to the towpath is immediately on the left as you leave the tunnel ⚠️
The part along the Thérouanne canal is the nicest part for me.
At the end of the route, the stage along the Marne is the least interesting. The view of the Marne is hidden by trees for most of the way.

A very pleasant walk that takes you past ponds and pretty streams. The descent to the underground passage is a little tricky but adds spice to the walk.

We combined a self-guided tour of the Grand Voyeux reserve in the morning (to be booked in advance on the website) with this hike in the afternoon. The scenery is very picturesque, and the open-access observatory at the start of the walk gives you the chance to see lots of birds. We really enjoyed the walk along the canals and the very original tunnel passage. You do have to be a little careful not to slip, especially on the descent leading up to it, but nothing too serious. On the other hand, you'll need waterproof footwear as there's always water running down. We recommended this hike to some friends who did it a week after us and they enjoyed it too.

A very pleasant walk, almost always close to the water and mostly shaded. Which is great on a hot day like this. Very well explained. On the other hand, the tunnel under the Ourcq canal is a bit difficult to get to and slippery (but very original), so it's certainly not easy when it's raining. I highly recommend it!

I did this walk in hot, dry weather.
It takes a bit of persistence to find point 1, after the houses head towards the large gate at the end of this small road and on the left a small green sign indicates the entre Du chemin.🧐
Between points 8 and 9, very tall vegetation engulfs the path. You really have to dare to cross it 🤔
At point 11, the descent of the staircase that leads to the passage under the canal is passable in dry weather but certainly DANGEROUS IN WET WEATHER 🥴 Nevertheless, this opposite outward and return journey under the canal remains very interesting and amusing.
All in all, it's a very pleasant walk with lots of variety. Don't miss the observatory, where you'll see lots of birds.

Hello,

We suggest a small variation that will reduce the number of passages along the canal.
At the lift factory, head back up towards the canal as indicated, along the beautiful tree-lined path, and once you reach the towpath head east as far as the first bridge, cross the canal and then follow the GR1B that leads off between the spavers and the great sands, to reconnect with the route at marker 5, from where you take up the towpath again.
It's only about 400 or 500 m longer, and it's much less "monotonous", less windy if need be, and not beside a road.
Thank you for this very pleasant route, and happy new year 2023!

A really fun and interesting walk. The environments are varied and it's definitely worth doing.
Unfortunately, there's a big problem at bridge 11: "Take a path on the right with wooden steps, which leads down to the entrance of a tunnel passing under the canal.
At least one wooden step is missing, so you have to go down on unstable ground depending on the weather the previous few days.... Personally, I turned back just to be on the safe side.
