Description of the walk

Departure from Isles-Armentières-Congis station (Transilien P line).

(S) On leaving the station, head north and pass between the Isles-les-Meldeuses town hall and the post office. At the crossroads, turn left into Place Olivier Marteaux towards Conchis-le-Temple. Take the second right, Rue de l'Église, turn right and arrive at the foot of the church.

(1) Then follow the Route de Congis (D121e) to the left, heading towards the bridge in plain view and ignoring the side streets.

(2) Cross the Marne in two stages. On the other side, continue straight ahead on the D121e (Rue du Grand Voyeux) towards Congis-sur-Thérouanne. After a left-hand bend, turn right to immediately reach the towpath of the Canal de L'Ourcq.

(3) Turn left and follow the canal on your right.

(4) At the first bridge, leave the towpath and take the path that branches off slightly to the left. Cross Rue de Lizy (D121) and continue straight ahead along Chemin des Carreaux. Turn left and you will soon rejoin Rue de Lizy.

(5) Cross the road and continue straight ahead on Rue du Vert Moulin. Continue straight ahead, crossing Rue du Midi on the right-hand side. You will come out onto the D121e; follow it to the left until you reach Saint-Rémi Church.

(6) Continue straight ahead along Rue Pierre Lorraine. Take the first right, Rue des Grands Prés, and immediately cross Rue de la Marne on the left-hand side. Further on, the tarmac gives way to a path between fields. At the T-junction, at the edge of the woods, turn right and you will arrive at the edge of a branch of the Marne.

(7) Continue straight ahead and follow the river on your left. Further on, shortly after the two branches meet, turn right and leave the Marne. You will come out onto the D121. First turn left then right to cross the road and rejoin the towpath of the Canal de l'Ourcq.

(8) Turn left and follow the canal on your right for about 2 km.

(9) At the end of a wide right-hand bend (campsite on the left), leave the towpath and follow the Route de Congis (D121) to the right. Walk along the cemetery and continue straight ahead to the church in Varreddes.

(10) Turn right onto Rue de l'Église, then take the second left onto Rue du Four. At the next crossroads, turn right ontoRue Moreau Duchesne and pass the Varreddes post office. Cross a small street on the left, then another on the right.

(11) At the end, first turn left then right to cross the D405 and follow Rue de l'Ourcq. Stay on this street, ignoring the alleys on the left, and further on, cross Rue du Bourreau on the left. Finally, take the bridge over the Canal de l'Ourcq.

(12) On the other side, follow the towpath on the left, walk along the canal on your left and pass the Varreddes lock. Shortly before the D405, the path veers to the right, climbs and moves away from the canal. At the crossroads near the D405, go straight ahead and continue climbing.

(13) At the next intersection, follow the GR®1B (red and white markings) to the left. Go straight ahead (south-west) and pass under a high-voltage power line. Cross a stream, then a small road and walk alongside an electrical substation. Continue south-west with the GR® to the D405.

(14) Turn left and continue to the roundabout.

(15) Go around the roundabout on the right, take the first exit, Route de Varreddes (D406), and pass in front of the Meaux Great War Museum. Continue straight ahead along the road and cross the Canal de l'Ourcq. Walk along the Meaux cemetery and pass under a railway bridge.

(16) At the next junction, turn right onto Rue Croix Saint-Loup Prolongée. At the crossroads, continue straight ahead on the same street and pass in front of the Meaux mobile gendarmerie barracks. Cross Rue Jean Jaurès and continue straight ahead on Rue Fatou.

(17) At the end, turn left onto Rue des Cordeliers. Go around Place Henri IV on the left.

(18) At the traffic lights, turn right, pass in front of a cinema and follow Boulevard Jean Rose. Cross Rue de Longperrier on the left and continue along the boulevard.

(19) Take the next left onto Rue Notre-Dame. Pass by the side of Saint-Étienne Cathedral and go around it on the left to reach Place Charles de Gaulle.

(20) Turn left onto Rue de Martimprey. At the end (town hall opposite), turn right onto Rue Louis Geoffroy. Continue along Cours de Verdun and walk alongside a car park. At the crossroads, cross the D603 at the traffic lights, then turn left to reach Meaux station (E).
